Raiders Suddenly Have A Quarterback Question They May Need To Answer Fast

In his brief debut against the Patriots, rookie Fernando Mendoza showed enough potential to spark a crucial conversation about the future of the Raiders' quarterback position.

The Las Vegas Raiders didn’t get much right in Week 5, but Fernando Mendoza’s first regular-season action gave them at least a brief look at what the No. 1 overall pick can bring.

By the time Mendoza entered, the game was already out of reach. Las Vegas had fallen into a big early hole against the New England Patriots and never found a way back, turning in a road performance that was forgettable from start to finish. The offense stalled again, the defense was left out there too long, and the Raiders spent the day looking nothing like a team capable of keeping up.

That was the backdrop for Mendoza’s debut. With the Raiders down by nearly 30 points, Klint Kubiak and the coaching staff made the switch and sent the rookie in for Kirk Cousins, whose afternoon had already been wrecked by New England’s pass rush. It wasn’t a spot anyone would’ve chosen for a first look, but it was the right moment to get Mendoza on the field.

He only got one drive, so there’s a limit to how much can be taken from it. The situation was different, the sample was tiny, and the Patriots weren’t asking the same questions they had of Cousins earlier. Even so, a few things still jumped off the page.

Mendoza got the ball out quickly. He also showed enough willingness to use his legs that it seemed to help loosen things up, even in a game that was already slipping away.

There probably wasn’t a ton of game plan built specifically for him at that stage, so the play sheet may not have been especially deep. But the traits were visible.

On the stat sheet, Mendoza completed six of eight passes and ran for three yards. Mike Washington added five rushing yards, and Dylan Laube picked up nine. It was one of those stretches where you have to squint a little and read between the lines, but the rookie’s brief run still offered something to watch.

After five games, the Raiders’ offensive ceiling with Cousins at the controls feels pretty clear. Mendoza still has plenty to learn, but the case for more regular-season reps is starting to make sense. Las Vegas has two tougher games left before a road trip to the New York Jets, and if the team is serious about winning this season, it has to be honest about what’s holding the offense back.

The bigger point is hard to miss: one of the Raiders’ quarterbacks looks better suited to work with the pieces on the field. Teams are beginning to sort out the offense, and Mendoza needs more chances to play.

Raiders Hot Start Just Created A Trade Deadline Question Fans Will Love

A strong start has changed the conversation around the Raiders ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline, turning what looked like a sell-off scenario into a possible shopping trip. Las Vegas entered the season with plenty of outside doubt, but the early results have made it fair to ask whether the front office will look to reinforce the roster instead of merely stand pat, especially along the defensive line where help always carries extra appeal.

Khalil Mack has naturally surfaced in the speculation, which is enough to get Raiders fans talking even if the path to a reunion looks crowded with obstacles. The idea has some romance to it, but the deal itself would have to clear several hurdles, and the Raiders are also watching how other teams and situations play out, including rumblings around Marvin Harrison Jr. and the Texans as they weigh whether to wait and see how their own start unfolds. Patriots Fans Got An Intriguing First Look At The Raiders Top Pick

Fernando Mendoza finally got his first NFL snaps Sunday, and the setting gave the Raiders a little something to evaluate even in a lopsided game. The No. 1 overall pick came off the bench in the fourth quarter against New England and immediately looked poised, giving Las Vegas a glimpse of the player it believes can shape the offense for years to come.

Mendoza settled in quickly, completing his first five pass attempts and helping push the Raiders deep into Patriots territory before the drive fizzled out. It was only a brief cameo, and it came in a game already well out of hand, but for a rookie making his debut, there was enough there to leave Raiders fans with a reason to keep watching. Patriots Face An Early Depth Test With Their Secondary Running Thin

New England is heading into its Week 5 matchup with the Raiders already stretched thin in the secondary, and the roster churn around the Patriots has only made the setup more interesting. Christian Barmore and Rhamondre Stevenson are expected back, while practice squad players Elliott Davison, K.J. Britt and Brenden Schooler are set for their season debuts, but the bigger personnel story has been on defense, where the Patriots moved to add Kindle Vildor for cornerback depth.

The timing matters for Las Vegas because the Patriots are still sorting through several injuries at once, including Gonzalez and Davis, and the available depth at cornerback and receiver is far from ideal. With A.J. Brown and Mack Hollins unavailable at wideout, New England is walking into the game with a thinner margin for error than it would like, and the makeup of the secondary will be worth watching long before the first snap is over.
