Wide receiver remains the Raiders’ biggest question mark on offense, and that’s putting it lightly.
Las Vegas simply doesn’t have a deep list of proven perimeter threats, which means the passing game may have to lean on the tight end spot until somebody at receiver forces the issue. Klint Kubiak is an intelligent offensive mind, but even a sharp scheme can only carry things so far when the defense isn’t worried about the talent on the outside. The Raiders haven’t done much through the air in the “meaningful” preseason snaps, and that’s exactly the area Kubiak wants to fix.
So the real question is simple: who is going to grab hold of this room? And whoever it is, the turnaround needs to come quickly.
Jalen Nailor looks like the most obvious candidate. He arrived as the big-money free-agent signing and already has a defined track record as a depth receiver with the Minnesota Vikings. What he hasn’t had much of is a chance to operate as a top target, so there’s still some mystery around what this version of Nailor actually looks like.
What is clear is that he brings real talent. He’s improved his hands over the course of his NFL career and has enough speed to beat defenders. Kubiak should be able to carve out a role for him, but the Raiders would prefer not to see him boxed in as just a limited pass-catcher.
The dream scenario is straightforward: Nailor proves worth the investment, expands his route tree and turns into a genuine problem for defenses. That hasn’t happened yet, but the season hasn’t started either.
Jack Bech is another name the Raiders are banking on. His rookie year didn’t unfold the way he expected, but a new offensive system and better quarterback play should help bring out the talent that made him a second-round pick last year.
Bech has the route-running and ball skills to matter. He just couldn’t really show them off in an offense that didn’t give him much to work with. Now Las Vegas wants him to take a real step forward, because that kind of jump would go a long way toward stabilizing the passing game.
There’s also a clear payoff if Bech grows into a true X-receiver. That would help pull attention away from Brock Bowers, and the Raiders need somebody in that receiver room to become a dependable presence. Bech has the profile to be that guy.
Beyond the bigger names, there’s still room for someone to emerge from nowhere.
Rookie Malik Benson has drawn some attention in camp, and he’s already put up three catches for 44 yards across two preseason games. His speed and ability to hit on big plays give him a real path to becoming a threat.
Tre Tucker should be in the mix again as well. He’s entering the final season of his rookie contract, and another solid year could put him in line for a second deal with the Silver and Black.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. is another player the Raiders would love to see take a step. In his second season, he has the size and speed combination to become a meaningful part of the passing attack if his production climbs.
The bottom line for Las Vegas is hard to miss: this offense isn’t going anywhere unless the passing game gets help. The Raiders have options, but they need somebody to rise fast once the season starts.
