Raiders Sent Ashton Jeanty A Message And Now Comes The Test

Ashton Jeanty is gearing up for a pivotal performance against the 49ers as the Raiders look to reignite their star running back's impact.

Ashton Jeanty’s role in Las Vegas took a sharp hit in Week 8, but the Raiders don’t appear ready to push him aside for good. After carrying the ball only twice against the Jets, Jeanty is heading into Sunday’s matchup with the 49ers with a chance to reset his season and reclaim a bigger piece of the offense.

Mike Washington Jr. was the back the Raiders leaned on against New York, piling up 25 carries and looking more effective than Jeanty has in recent weeks. That shift sparked plenty of speculation about why Jeanty’s workload dropped so dramatically, but ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported that the move was not necessarily tied to Jeanty’s comments about the Jets defense during the week.

“The Raiders leaned into rookie running back Mike Washington Jr. over 2025 No. 6 pick Ashton Jeanty in Sunday’s victory over the Jets. Jeanty hasn’t played well while Washington has, and the Raiders hope it serves as a wake-up call,” Graziano reported this week.

“If it doesn’t, they’re content to distribute the carries in Washington’s favor moving forward, as he offers a more explosive element in the run game right now. Earlier this year, the Raiders believed it was a preseason ankle injury that was slowing down Jeanty, and in truth that may have been part of the problem. But he has been healthy enough to play and fully practice every week, so they’re at a point where they want to see him play better.”

That’s the clearest sign yet that the Raiders are asking for more from their first-round pick, and they’re not leaning heavily on excuses tied to the offensive line or the foot issues Jeanty has dealt with since August.

Even so, the expectation is that his usage should climb against San Francisco. The Raiders spent a first-round pick on him, and there’s still reason to believe they’ll give him a real chance to answer after last week’s message game. Washington should still be part of the plan, but not in anything close to the 25-to-2 split from Week 8.

Raider Nation Radio host Q Myers also sees Jeanty as a key piece for Las Vegas in this one. On the Locked on Raiders Squad Show on Thursday, Myers said the Raiders probably need a big outing from Jeanty to have a shot.

“I think for the Raiders to win this game, if they have a chance to win this game, Ashton Jeanty has got to have a big game,” Myers said on the Locked on Raiders Squad Show on Thursday.

“I just think it’s that simple, and I’m not just necessarily saying running the rock. I believe if you go back and look, the one Achilles heel that the 49ers have defensively, is stopping the running back out of the backfield for catching passes.

They’re just not good at it. I mean, just go back and look again.

This ain’t fantasy football. I’m speaking facts.

They have not done a very good job of stopping the running backs from having big games out of the backfield catching passes.”

“Well, what has Ashton Jeanty done better than any running back in the league this year as far as catching balls out of the backfield? He’s the best. He’s the best in the league at that right now currently.”

For fantasy managers, the Week 8 dud makes Jeanty a tougher player to trust than usual. But the warning signs from last Sunday may not mean a repeat this week. The better bet is that the Raiders get him more involved, and that Jeanty gets a chance to show the kind of response the team is looking for.

Greg Papa And Raiders Finally Have An Emotional Reunion Story

Greg Papas long run as the Raiders play-by-play voice made him one of the more recognizable figures in the franchises modern history, and his ties to the organization have taken on a more personal tone in recent months. Now the 49ers radio play-by-play announcer, Papa said in an interview on the JT The Brick Show that his relationship with Raiders owner Mark Davis has improved after a difficult stretch that changed the perspective around their connection.

Papa revealed that the two had drifted apart before his acute lymphoblastic leukemia diagnosis in July 2025, but the illness brought a meaningful reconciliation. He said Davis reached out soon after the diagnosis and later brought him back to Las Vegas for a special honor tied to Al Davis, a gesture that underscored how much the relationship had shifted since their earlier friction. Raiders Young Defense Faces Its Biggest Test Yet Against San Francisco

The Raiders got a needed defensive lift in their Week 8 win over the Jets, a reminder that even in the first year of Rob Leonards rebuild, there are signs of progress. The work has centered on a young back end, with several first- and second-year players getting thrown into real responsibility early and learning on the fly as the season unfolds.

San Francisco brings a different kind of challenge, the sort that can expose every young edge and every missed assignment. For Las Vegas, this is less about one game than about measuring how far the defense has come against a roster built on discipline, depth and pressure from all angles, with the next step in that evaluation still waiting on Sunday. Raiders Midseason Rankings Show Whats Carrying This 4-4 Team

At the midpoint of the season, the Raiders 4-4 record looks a lot more understandable when you sort the roster unit by unit. The latest evaluation of the position groups points to a team that has found real stability in a few key spots, with the discussion centered on how much production the offense has gotten from its top pass catchers and how that has helped keep Las Vegas afloat through the first half.

The most interesting part of the breakdown is how the Raiders are getting meaningful contributions from places that were supposed to be more of a question mark. Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer have given the offense a dependable foundation, while Kirk Cousins has been one of the bigger surprises of the season after a strong opening stretch. The rankings make clear that Las Vegas has some genuine strengths carrying it right now, even if the full picture of where this team stands is still being sorted out. [Read more 🡒]
