Raiders Running Game Suddenly Has A Bigger Week 4 Concern

With Ashton Jeanty uncertain for the Raiders' Week 5 clash against the Patriots due to injury, concerns mount over his impact on the struggling running game.

The Raiders may be 3-1, but the health of Ashton Jeanty is turning into a real problem at the worst possible time.

Jeanty missed practice on Friday and was not on the field when Las Vegas began individual drills, according to reporter Sam Warren. That came after he was already limited on Thursday, when the team added a foot injury to the ankle issue that had shown up earlier in the week. The Raiders have labeled him questionable for Sunday, though he is still traveling with the team and could be a game-time decision.

That leaves his availability for the Week 4 matchup with the New England Patriots very much up in the air. The timing is rough for a Raiders offense trying to get its run game moving, and Jeanty’s status now sits near the center of that effort.

The rookie opened the season with his best showing, even while dealing with an ankle sprain suffered in practice before Week 1. Against the Dolphins, he ran for 102 yards and caught two touchdowns.

Since then, though, the production has dipped. Jeanty is averaging 3.4 yards per carry this season, down from the 3.7 yards per carry he posted last year, and the combination of ankle and foot concerns has only added to the uncertainty.

Jeanty said he knows more is expected from him. He pointed to the need to finish plays, break tackles and make better decisions when opportunities appear.

“I think we’ve just got to be better. Simple as that,” Jeanty said.

“Make the plays that are out there. … It starts with us.

Starts with me. Got to break tackles and make bigger plays when they’re available.”

He also said he wants to improve as a pass protector, while acknowledging that his work as a receiver has already helped the offense. Jeanty has 19 catches this season, and he said he welcomes the added involvement.

“I feel like that was an area of my game that I didn’t get to utilize as much, so coming in with this new scheme and being more involved in the pass game is great,” Jeanty added.

Head coach Klint Kubiak wants the ground game to look more like it did in the opener against Miami, when the Raiders were more efficient running the ball.

“Going back to that first game [against Miami], just as a whole unit, we played better,” Kubiak said. “We were more efficient running the football, and that’s something we got to get back to. So, it’s something that we’re diligent about.”

For now, Jeanty’s status remains one of the biggest questions hanging over Las Vegas as it prepares for New England.

Raiders Suddenly Face A Huge Week 5 Ashton Jeanty Concern

A midweek injury wrinkle has put Ashton Jeantys status in question as the Raiders get ready to face the Patriots. The rookie running back has been one of Las Vegas most important offensive pieces this season, which is why any hint of missed time lands hard for a team trying to steady itself heading into another AFC matchup.

Jeanty was added to the injury report on Thursday, and the concern is not just one sore spot but a pair of them. With Mike Washington Jr. expected to absorb a bigger workload if Jeanty cant go, the Raiders suddenly have a backfield situation worth watching closely as the week moves on. [Read more 🡒]

Raiders Suddenly Have A Receiver Problem Kubiak Can't Ignore

The Raiders are suddenly staring at a thinner receiver room than they expected, and the timing could hardly be worse. Jalen Nailor is in concussion protocol after a helmet-to-helmet hit, while Jack Bech is already on injured reserve with a broken forearm, leaving head coach Klint Kubiak with an obvious depth issue to manage as the season moves forward.

Kubiak said all options will be considered to bolster the group, which is exactly the kind of language that tends to set off the trade and signing chatter around this time of year. Jerry Jeudy, Tory Horton and K.J. Osborn have all surfaced as possible fits, and the Raiders now have to decide whether this is a short-term patch job or the start of a more significant reshaping of the passing-game depth chart. Ashton Jeanty Is Changing A Key Part Of The Raiders Offense

Ashton Jeantys second NFL season has brought a noticeably different job description in Las Vegas, and it has given the Raiders another layer on offense under Klint Kubiak. More often than not, Jeanty is showing up as a pass-catching threat instead of simply the back finishing runs, and that change has made him a more central piece of how the Raiders are moving the ball while they sit at 3-1.

The fit has not been perfect, though, and both Jeanty and Kubiak have been open about where there is still room to grow. The rushing game has had its stretches of struggle, and Jeanty has pointed to pass protection and sharper reads as parts of his own game he wants to clean up as the Raiders try to build on an encouraging start.
