Raiders Quarterback Plan Suddenly Feels Less Settled Than Expected

As injuries test the resilience of AFC teams, up-and-coming leaders like veterans and rookies alike are stepping up to shape their squads' futures.

Rashawn Slater is back on the field for the Chargers, and the left tackle says the biggest thing right now is staying patient.

Slater has returned after missing time because of injury, and the team is handling his comeback carefully. His repaired knee is feeling good, and he says he can get into his stance without pain. Still, he made it clear that this is about easing back in the right way, not rushing to the finish line.

“It’s definitely a struggle sometimes. Just want to be out there for the team,” Slater said, via the team website.

“I hate missing out, but one of the really good things about our [medical] staff is they’re so thoughtful and they understand in some ways they need to protect players from themselves a little bit. It’s difficult, but at the same time, when you compare it to what’s to come, it’s not so difficult of a decision.

Nothing crazy, just being thoughtful and learning. I mean, you have a surgery like that, the rehab went great but things can still happen and things are different.

Really, we’re just learning. This is my first time playing football in a year, so there’s going to be things that are different.

We have to be mindful about them. But again, nothing that’s concerning, just got to keep going, keep being thoughtful.

Getting ready for what matters.”

He said the knee feels better than before and that movement is coming along well.

“It does feel different, it feels better, honestly,” Slater continued. “I can get in my stance with no pain … it feels really good, really positive when I’m moving.

It’s strong, it’s stable. Obviously, when you do a procedure, there’s some things that changed slightly.

There’s more tissue in the knee. The repair is really strong, so because of that there’s extra tissue and stuff.

Does that change the mechanics? Not that I notice.

Just taking it day by day. It’s going well.

Just controlling what I can control, doing everything I can and staying locked in mentally and physically, too. I know it’s coming and when that happens, we’re not going to be worried about this.

I just keep that in mind and trust the process…I feel like the real celebration is going to be when I’m out there playing again on Sundays.”

Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh also praised first-round pick Akheem Mesidor after his preseason debut, calling it a strong opening showing. Harbaugh said, “That was nine really good snaps.

He graded 100% out of the nine snaps on effort and technique. Had the ball not come out quick, he was getting there.”

In Kansas City, Travis Kelce is looking inward as he heads into the season, saying he can do more to help lead the Chiefs when things get tight.

Kelce said he wants to be more vocal and more consistent in those moments when the pressure rises and the team needs someone to steady the room.

“Just being a better leader,” Kelce said, via Pro Football Talk. “When we get stuck, with adversity hitting, who’s going to want you in that foxhole with you? That’s one of those things, I want to be one of those guys that everybody counts on to be there and get us out of that foxhole.”

He added that he could have done better in that area before.

“There were things I could have done better in that regard,” Kelce admitted. “Everybody feels everything’s got to get turned up a little bit, and that’s what you’re seeing right now.

I feel ready to rock and roll. Just trying to make sure I set that example for the guys around me, that this is the standard.”

The Chiefs are also dealing with some injury issues on the offensive side. Josh Simmons has a back injury, according to Nate Taylor. Taylor also reported that Tyquan Thornton has a strained hamstring and Jimmy Holiday has a quad injury.

Out in Las Vegas, the Raiders are saying they want to be patient with first-round quarterback Fernando Mendoza, but the situation still has plenty of moving parts.

Mendoza’s preseason debut has pushed the conversation forward again about whether he could eventually overtake veteran Kirk Cousins. Raiders general manager John Spytek said the team’s approach will depend on how Mendoza and Cousins are performing, along with the team’s record.

“It’s all of it,” Spytek said via NFL Blue Book’s Charles Robinson. “How Fernando practices, how Kirk practices, wins and losses.

If Kirk’s in there and we’re 7-3 after 10 games, that’s different than if we’re 3-7. That’s probably ultimately what kept Mahomes on the bench [as a rookie with the Kansas City Chiefs].

They were in the playoffs. They were in the race through the whole thing.”

He also said the organization is sticking to its process, even while leaving room for change.

“Right now we’re committed to our process. But I walk in here every day thinking ‘What’s going to happen today?’”

Spytek was also asked about Maxx Crosby and the possibility that other teams could be monitoring him as a trade target. His answer was straightforward.

“People do what they do. I’m just trying to make the Raiders as good as possible. Right now Maxx is here and I have every expectation that he’ll be here.”

Raiders Joint Practice Just Took A Brutal Turn Texans Fans Feared

What was supposed to be a sharp August tune-up between the Raiders and Texans instead turned into a gut punch for Houston, with practice suddenly carrying far more weight than anyone wanted. Jayden Higgins had given the Texans a real early return on their rookie investment last season, finishing his first year with 41 catches, 525 yards and six touchdowns, and the joint session in Las Vegas was another chance for him to keep building on that momentum.

Instead, the evaluation came back far worse than anyone on either sideline could have hoped, and the fallout is now reshaping Houstons plans for the year ahead. For a receiver who looked like he was becoming part of the Texans long-term picture, the loss is a major setback, and the bigger question now is how they absorb it once the season gets going. Raiders Just Gave Fernando Mendoza A Test That Could Change Things

Fernando Mendoza got a look many rookies wait a while to earn, taking snaps with the Raiders first-team offense during a joint practice against the Texans. The setting mattered too, because the session was described as mostly upbeat and controlled, with only a few brief scuffles breaking up what was otherwise a clean day of work for both sides.

For a young quarterback trying to establish where he fits, those kinds of reps can mean more than a normal practice script. Klint Kubiak framed the opportunity as part of a planned evaluation, and he made clear the staff still wants to go back through the tape before drawing any firm conclusions, which leaves this as a useful checkpoint rather than a finished verdict.
