Raiders Quarterback Debate Just Got More Complicated After Fernando Mendoza Debut

NFL legend Kurt Warner offers a cautious perspective on the quarterback debate, suggesting the Las Vegas Raiders stick with Kirk Cousins despite Fernando Mendoza's promising debut.

Fernando Mendoza’s first taste of NFL action was enough to get the rumor mill spinning, but Kurt Warner isn’t ready to push Kirk Cousins aside just yet.

Mendoza made his debut for the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5 against the New England Patriots, entering in the fourth quarter after the game had already tilted heavily in New England’s favor. Even with that limited cameo, the chatter started almost immediately: should the rookie be taking over for Cousins?

That speculation picked up steam because the Raiders have now dropped three straight with Cousins running the offense. They lost again in Week 6 to the Buffalo Bills, which only kept the conversation alive around whether Las Vegas might make a switch at quarterback.

Warner, though, said on “The Rich Eisen Show” that he would hold off.

“I don't think they should, as of yet. I believe this team is not a great football team. But they got some key pieces, including Kirk Cousins, that are making them competitive every time out,” said Warner, a two-time MVP.

“I think it's too early right now with how competitive and how well Kirk is playing to go to Fernando just yet. There may come a time when you feel that this team is not good enough, they're not gonna make a playoff push, and you make that move. But I don't think the time is right now.”

Mendoza, who is 23 and the No. 1 pick, finished 6-of-8 for 48 yards against the Patriots and added one carry for three yards. He did not see the field in the loss to Buffalo.

Cousins, 38, was busy in that Bills game, going 23-of-41 for 313 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. He’s in his first season with Las Vegas and drew plenty of attention after helping the Raiders open 3-0, even as the offense has since hit a rough patch.

The Raiders’ next chance to sort things out comes Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

Raiders Suddenly Have Too Many Roster Questions To Ignore

The Raiders came out of Buffalo with a 33-30 loss that felt bigger than just another mark in the standings. It was their third straight defeat, dropping them to 3-3 and putting the spotlight on the same problems that have been hard to shake for weeks: turnovers at bad times, an offense that can bog down, and a defense that has not been creating the extra possessions this team needs.

Ashton Jeantys play is now part of that larger conversation, because the running game has not consistently carried its share of the load. The bigger roster question, though, is whether Las Vegas has enough help at wide receiver to keep the offense from getting stuck when the game tightens up, especially with the defense still struggling to produce takeaways and give the group a shorter field to work with. Raiders Losing Streak Puts John Spytek Trade Decision In Focus

A three-game losing streak has put the Raiders back into a familiar midseason debate: whether the roster needs a real jolt before the trade deadline. The wide receiver room remains under the microscope, and the issue is not depth so much as the absence of a true difference-maker who can tilt a game and give the offense a more reliable top option.

That is why John Spyteks front office is being pushed into the conversation about aggressive moves, with the broader idea being that Las Vegas should at least explore the market for a receiver who can fit beyond a short-term rental. The Raiders have not made any confirmed move, but the deadline chatter is starting to sound less like background noise and more like a test of how willing they are to act while the offense searches for a spark. Raiders Suddenly Face A Real Test As Pressure Builds On Kubiak

Three weeks into the season, the Raiders have enough on film to make the early promise feel real and enough recent damage to make it feel fragile. Under Klint Kubiak, Las Vegas sits at 3-3 after six games, a marked step forward from the way the franchise has looked in recent seasons, but the mood around the building has shifted quickly with the team stuck in a three-game losing streak and a matchup with the Rams up next.

Kubiak has framed the response in familiar terms, leaning on accountability and leadership as the standard for a group still trying to define itself. The bigger question now is whether that message can turn into something more concrete as the Raiders head into Week 7, where the margin for error is starting to shrink and every result seems to matter a little more than the last.
