Raiders Loss Put Fernando Mendoza's Timeline In The Spotlight

The Las Vegas Raiders' Week 5 matchup against the Patriots exposed critical areas for improvement and highlighted the evolving dynamic between seasoned and emerging talent.

The Las Vegas Raiders left Week 5 with a lopsided loss to the New England Patriots, but the game also gave them something else: Fernando Mendoza’s first regular-season snaps.

For most of the afternoon in Boston, the Raiders looked flat and well behind a Patriots team missing plenty of players. The result was ugly enough to reflect just about every issue Las Vegas still has to clean up, especially after a 3-1 start that has now given way to a rougher stretch. But once the game slipped out of reach, the Raiders used the moment to get their No. 1 overall pick on the field without asking him to carry the offense.

Klint Kubiak said the staff has been preparing Mendoza to play since he was drafted, and he made it clear that Kirk Cousins remains the starter. Still, the Raiders saw value in getting the rookie his first live action at the pro level in a situation with no real pressure attached.

"That's why he's here. We have a lot of confidence in him.

Kirk's [Cousins] the starter, and if Fernando's [Mendoza] called upon, he'll be ready to go just like he was. I just think as an offense we underperformed.

We scored on three of 11 possessions. And it starts with all of us.

So, we're all in it together. We all did not get it done," Kubiak said after the game.

Mendoza didn’t look overwhelmed when he came in. He completed his first five passes, and Kubiak said the rookie handled the moment well against a defense that wasn’t coming after him as aggressively.

“He was prepared. He played fast.

He got through his progressions quickly. He knew his hot issues.

It was a solid start for him. I think with any reps that you get, it's going to make you better.

The live game reps are the best medicine, but him just getting time with our starting offensive line in an on the road environment was a very positive experience for him. Although it wasn't for us," Kubiak said.

That brief cameo stood out as the clearest takeaway from a game the Raiders would probably like to forget. It also reinforced just how early they are in this rebuild. For all the damage the Patriots did on the scoreboard, Mendoza’s appearance may have mattered most to the bigger picture.

Cousins, for his part, has moved on from the loss and has handled this week like any other. Before Wednesday’s practice, he said the mindset has to be steady, but not detached.

“Stay the course. Get back to work.

You can't have the poor me’s, and you can't brush it off as no big deal. I think it's somewhere in the middle.

You have to find that balance of how you come back to work with it hurts, it matters to you, but at the same time, new week,” Cousins said before practice on Wednesday.

The Raiders return home to face the Buffalo Bills in Week 6, and that will bring the quarterback situation back to its normal rhythm. Cousins is still in charge, but Mendoza’s progress will keep happening in the background.

At some point, the rookie’s development may start to show up on Sundays more than in practice. For now, the Raiders have time, and no reason to rush it.

Raiders Offense Has A Kirk Cousins Problem Fans Can See

The Patriots came after Kirk Cousins with an aggressive defensive approach in the Raiders latest game, and the result was an offense that never quite found its footing. New England made life uncomfortable for the veteran quarterback and forced Las Vegas into a game plan that leaned away from pushing the ball downfield, leaving the Raiders searching for answers as the pressure mounted.

Cousins reluctance to challenge the defense deep was one of the clearest signs of how well the Patriots dictated the terms. It has also only sharpened the conversation around whether backup Mendoza might offer a different look if the Raiders decide they need more variety under center, even though no changes have been made yet. Raiders Desperately Need Receiver Help And One Fit Stands Out

The Raiders passing game has become an awkward study in misplaced production, with only three players clearing 20 catches and two of them coming from the tight end room while a running back is also part of that group. That leaves Las Vegas searching for more juice on the perimeter, and the urgency only grew after the club reportedly pursued a deal for Marvin Harrison Jr. before the Houston Texans beat them to it.

One name now circulating as a possible answer is Minnesota Vikings receiver Jauan Jennings, whose situation has grown murky amid limited production and reported tension with his current team. What makes him especially interesting for the Raiders is his familiarity with passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak, a connection that could matter if Las Vegas decides it needs a receiver who can get up to speed quickly. Carson Beck Could Change The Cardinals Conversation Faster Than Expected

After the Raiders second straight loss, the quarterback discussion has already started to shift in Las Vegas, and Fernando Mendozas NFL debut only added another layer to it. His first start still is not settled, which leaves the team in the familiar spot of weighing whether a rookie can steady things quickly enough while the season keeps moving around him.

Across the league, the rookie quarterback ripple is showing up in Arizona too, where Carson Beck could be pressed into action sooner rather than later as the Cardinals work through their own struggles. It is another reminder that 2026 is becoming a year where young passers are changing the conversation fast, even as Trevor Lawrences strong play and rising card market show how quickly the quarterback market can move when the on-field results start to click.
