Raiders' John Spytek Stuns Fans With Bold Rookie Class Evaluation

John Spytek offers insights into the Raiders' 2025 rookie class, highlighting their growth potential despite limited game time.

Evaluating the Las Vegas Raiders' 2025 rookie class was no easy task for fans, as only Ashton Jeanty and Darien Porter saw significant playing time. Porter's increased snaps came late in the season, filling in for an injured Kyu Blu Kelly. Former head coach Pete Carroll's commitment to competing, even with playoffs out of reach, left fans curious about what to expect from GM John Spytek's first draft class.

At the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, Spytek shared insights into his rookie evaluations, despite limited game footage.

John Spytek's Take on the Raiders' Rookies

Many fans hoped to see more from the rookies once the postseason was out of reach, but Carroll prioritized competition over development. Spytek addressed this during a press conference, expressing confidence in the growth he witnessed in practice.

"I saw them every day in practice. I saw them get better," Spytek noted.

He highlighted players like Tonka Hemingway, who racked up sacks late in the season, and JJ Pegues, who got some playing time. Spytek emphasized their dedication, mentioning Caleb Rogers' consistent presence in training since the season ended.

Spytek also discussed Jack Bech, praising his versatility and hinting at creative uses similar to how Klint Kubiak deployed Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

In a media scrum, Spytek spoke about Grant and Rogers competing for starting roles in their second year. "I've always believed in them," he said, expressing excitement about their potential in the new offensive style. He acknowledged the need for improvement but was optimistic about their athleticism and commitment.

The new offensive line coach is expected to aid in their development, with both players showing promise in limited action last season.

When asked if he wished the rookies had played more, Spytek replied, "Whether I wanted it or not, it's not the way it went. I got to watch those guys practice every day. They're about the right stuff."

Spytek emphasized patience with young players, particularly offensive linemen, acknowledging the challenges they face as rookies. "We've got to support those guys and build them up," he said.

While the Raiders' rookie class was underutilized in Year 1, Spytek's comments suggest optimism for their development under Klint Kubiak. The team missed an opportunity to accelerate their growth on the field, but as free agency and the draft approach, these young players are poised for a larger role in 2026.
