Jack Bech’s injury has left the Raiders with a pretty straightforward roster call, and Cody White looks like the cleanest answer.
Bech’s return to New Orleans was already an emotional one, given the tragedy tied to the city, but Sunday’s Week 3 win over the Saints ended with him leaving early after getting hurt. The early signs weren’t encouraging, and the picture has only gotten clearer since then.
Kubiak’s only firm comment on the situation was brief, but it said enough. He didn’t give a recovery timeline or officially announce an IR move, yet he did say, while discussing the team’s larger injury situation:
"Every week, someone's going to be out, and we're going to have more guys out this week. Jack Bech is probably going to be out. And the team finds a way to win."
That lines up with NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reporting that Bech is headed to injured reserve with a designation to return. It also suggests the rookie wideout, who was starting to settle into a revamped offense, is in line for a stint on the shelf.
The injury itself wasn’t easy to pinpoint in real time. It appeared to happen late in the first half on a play in the end zone, when Saints safety Justin Reid hit Bech on an uncatchable ball and drew an unnecessary roughness penalty. But Bech didn’t exactly look like a player who was finished in the moment.
His right arm was wrapped after the game, though he got back up after the hit and took help from Brock Bowers with that same arm. He even stayed in for the next two plays before being checked out and eventually ruled out at halftime. That’s a tough scene for a player who had been making progress.
If the recovery goes well, the hope is that Bech only misses a few weeks and returns without much of a setback. He has become a dependable target in tight spots, and his run blocking gives the offense real value beyond the stat sheet.
That’s where White comes in.
The practice squad receiver has made every chance count. He flashed on special teams in Week 1, then broke through in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers with two huge second-half touchdowns. On Sunday, after being elevated again, he found the end zone once more.
Three games. Three catches. Three touchdowns.
The roster math is the real reason this matters. Teams can elevate a practice squad player for game day and send him back down three times. After that, if they want him active again, he has to be signed to the 53-man roster.
Las Vegas has used up those free elevations with White. Without a roster move, the Raiders would have to either leave him off the field on Sundays or clear space by cutting someone else. Bech’s expected move to IR changes that.
White fits the opening neatly. He plays the same position as Bech, he’s producing touchdowns, and he’s been useful on special teams too, including another tackle on a kick return in Week 3. For a team looking to keep the momentum going, that makes him the obvious player to promote.
The one wrinkle is Dont’e Thornton Jr., who is on short-term IR with a designation to return. If he’s ready, the Raiders could choose to activate him. Still, all signs point toward White getting the call, especially with Kubiak seemingly liking what he’s seen from him.
