The Raiders are continuing to shape their new-look coaching staff, and they’ve added a veteran presence to the mix. Former Titans interim head coach Mike McCoy is joining Las Vegas as assistant head coach under newly appointed head coach Klint Kubiak, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
This move brings a wealth of experience to Kubiak’s staff. McCoy, 53, has been around the NFL block more than a few times, with a résumé that stretches back over two decades. He kicked off his NFL coaching career in 2000 with the Carolina Panthers as their quarterbacks coach and spent nearly a decade there before moving on to become the Broncos’ offensive coordinator in 2009.
McCoy’s work in Denver didn’t go unnoticed. After four seasons guiding the Broncos’ offense, he landed his first head coaching gig with the Chargers in 2013. His tenure in San Diego had its ups and downs - a 27-36 overall record with one playoff appearance and a postseason win - but it gave him valuable experience leading a team from the top.
Following his stint with the Chargers, McCoy returned to Denver in 2017 for a second run as offensive coordinator, though that reunion was short-lived. He was let go after just one season. The Cardinals brought him on board in 2018 as their offensive coordinator under Steve Wilks, but again, the fit didn’t last - McCoy was dismissed just seven games into the season.
Still, McCoy remained in the coaching carousel. He resurfaced with the Jaguars as a quarterbacks coach before joining the Titans in 2025 as a senior offensive assistant.
When Tennessee parted ways with Brian Callahan midseason, McCoy stepped in as interim head coach. The Titans went 2-9 under his leadership during that stretch.
Now, he’ll take on a new role in Las Vegas, offering a seasoned voice alongside Kubiak, who’s stepping into his first head coaching job. For a young head coach, having someone like McCoy - who’s seen just about every side of the NFL coaching life - could be a stabilizing force and a valuable sounding board.
The Raiders are clearly trying to strike a balance between fresh ideas and experienced leadership. With McCoy in the building, they’ve added a coach who’s been in the fire - as a coordinator, a head coach, and a mentor. That kind of perspective doesn’t just help in the meeting rooms; it can shape the culture of a locker room.
As Kubiak begins to lay the foundation for his era in Las Vegas, McCoy's addition signals that the Raiders are serious about surrounding their new head coach with people who’ve weathered the highs and lows of the league.
