Raiders Have A Real Chance To Expose Buffalos Biggest Defensive Problem

Can the Raiders seize the opportunity to exploit the Bills' vulnerable defense and snap their losing streak in a pivotal clash?

The Las Vegas Raiders come into this afternoon trying to snap a two-game skid, but the Buffalo Bills are a tough draw for a team looking to steady itself. The Bills have played like one of the NFL’s best teams, which makes this matchup a rough one for Klint Kubiak’s group.

Still, there is one clear opening for Las Vegas: Buffalo’s defense has been shaky. The unit is under a new defensive coordinator in Jim Leonhard, and the Bills are still adjusting to a new scheme while trying to build chemistry. That has shown up in a few different ways, and it gives the Raiders a path if they’re sharp and aggressive.

The Raiders scored only 17 points against the New England Patriots last week, and that kind of output is unlikely to cut it here. Buffalo can score in bunches, so Las Vegas will need to make the most of every chance it gets.

Leonhard is a familiar face to the Raiders from his time as assistant head coach for the Denver Broncos. He also played defensive back for Denver in 2012, when he recorded 18 tackles and two interceptions.

The Bills have been working out of a 3-4 base defense, and that transition has created some issues with rotations. It has also helped opposing teams run the ball fairly efficiently against Buffalo.

The bigger concern, though, has been through the air. The Bills are allowing the second-most passing yards per game in the NFL.

That sets up an opportunity for Kirk Cousins if Buffalo’s secondary continues to have problems. The Bills have used both man and zone coverage this season, and if receivers are winning their matchups while the defensive backs are slow to react, Cousins should be able to find openings.

Brock Bowers is always a threat to break a game open, but this matchup could be especially favorable for him. Buffalo’s linebackers have struggled in coverage, so Kubiak may want to move Bowers into the slot or line him up in-line to exploit those spots.

Las Vegas also needs a wide receiver to make a difference, and Tre Tucker could be the one to do it. He is expected to see Christian Benford, Buffalo’s top cornerback, which gives that matchup some added intrigue.

The Raiders do not want to become the Bills’ easy fix on defense. If they’re going to have a shot at their fourth win of the season, Kubiak will need to keep pressing the issue against a Buffalo unit that has not been nearly as clean as its overall record might suggest.

Raiders Offense Faces Growing Pressure In A Brutal Spot Against Buffalo

The Raiders head into Week 7 with plenty of offensive urgency and not much margin for error, trying to keep a losing streak from stretching to three games against a Buffalo team that rarely hands out easy answers. Las Vegas has been sorting through uneven play and injury concerns while trying to get more out of a group that includes Kirk Cousins, rookie Fernando Mendoza, Ashton Jeanty, Brock Bowers and Tre Tucker.

Cousins has taken the bulk of the attention because of how the offense has looked around him, but the bigger issue is getting the whole unit back on schedule before the matchup with the Bills turns into another long afternoon. Jeantys health is part of that picture, along with the need for Bowers and Tucker to be more central to what the Raiders do, and the pressure only grows from there if Las Vegas cannot find a cleaner rhythm soon. Maxx Crosby Draws New NFL Punishment After Raiders Loss To Patriots

The Raiders Week 5 loss to the Patriots brought another bit of fallout for one of the leagues most visible defenders. Maxx Crosby was docked by the NFL after a helmet-to-helmet hit on New England defensive tackle Cory Durden, adding a postgame cost to a frustrating afternoon for Las Vegas.

Crosbys punishment stood out around the league, too, since it was the biggest individual fine handed out in Week 5. For a Raiders team trying to steady itself after the defeat, it was another reminder that the edge Crosby plays with can come with consequences beyond the box score. [Read more 🡒]

Raiders Defense Faces Its Biggest Test Yet Against Josh Allen

The Raiders defense spent the early part of the 2026 season looking like one of the better units in the league, but the recent stretch has been a reminder of how quickly the week-to-week grind can change. After giving up high point totals to the Chiefs and Patriots, Las Vegas now turns to Buffalo, where the challenge gets much steeper against one of the NFLs most dangerous offenses.

Josh Allen and Joe Brady bring a different kind of test, the sort that forces a defense to be sharp on every snap and disciplined in every gap. Defensive coordinator Rob Leonard is sorting through his options as the Raiders try to steady things again, knowing the Bills can beat teams in a variety of ways and leave little margin for error.
