The Las Vegas Raiders got the version of Ashton Jeanty they were hoping for, and then some.
After a late-camp ankle injury had stirred real concern around his Week One availability, Jeanty answered on Sunday with a performance that helped carry the Raiders to a 27-13 win over the Miami Dolphins at Allegiant Stadium. He didn’t just play - he looked like the center of the offense from the jump.
“I felt good. Once everything happened, I knew I was going to be ready for Week One,” said Jeanty about preparing himself for the regular season despite the turmoil.
“Just putting in the work and also our training staff is one of the best. They did a good job of getting me back healthy.”
Jeanty handled 23 carries for 102 rushing yards, but his biggest impact came as a receiver. He tied recently extended Michael Mayer for the team lead with six catches, finished with 45 receiving yards and scored two touchdowns. Those scores also gave Kirk Cousins a pair of career markers: the first was the 300th passing touchdown of his career, and the second moved him into sole possession of 13th all-time in passing touchdowns, passing Denver Broncos legend John Elway.
“I think it’s just a testament to trying to win the long game, trying to have good habits over a long period of time,” said Cousins about reaching such major career milestones.
“I feel like it’s also a testament to the people I’ve been able to work with, coaches, the players around me. Really grateful for all the people involved in being able to do that.”
Cousins was sharp early, completing his first 10 passes, and while he did throw two interceptions, he still did more than enough to steer Las Vegas to a comfortable opening win.
“I thought he came ready to play,” said Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak on the play of his quarterback. “He had a great start to the game.
Two decisions that he’s got to have back. That’s the nature of the position, so that’s something we’re going to get fixed and get cleaned up but, overall, he played winning football.”
The Raiders also got a big lift from both lines, a welcome sign after the offseason investment up front. The offensive line kept Cousins clean all day and didn’t allow a sack. On defense, new edge rusher Kwity Paye made an immediate impression with two sacks, Maxx Crosby added 1.5, Nakobe Dean chased down Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis in a key sequence, and Folorounso Fatukasi chipped in a half sack.
“We got to watch the tape, but I love the way our defense played,” said Kubiak. “How they swarmed, how they turned the ball over, how they responded to sudden change. Very proud of them.”
Miami quarterback Malik Willis threw for 220 yards and ran for the Dolphins’ only touchdown, but the Raiders made life difficult throughout. Treydan Stukes picked off a throw into double coverage for the rookie’s first career interception. De’Von Achane was held to 36 rushing yards on 11 carries and 30 receiving yards on four catches, while rookie Caleb Douglas had five receptions for 94 yards.
The game ended with another defensive statement. Jeremy Chinn forced a fumble on Dolphins receiver Malik Washington, and Quay Walker recovered it to punctuate the win.
Special teams chipped in too. Dylan Laube and Malik Benson had strong return moments, AJ Cole helped pin Miami at its own three-yard line on a punt, and Joe DeCamillis’s unit mostly controlled the phase despite a 75-yard kickoff return by Jaylen Wright that didn’t lead to points.
“So many phases of football and people contributed and that’s the way Klint wants it to be and it should be around here,” said Cousins on the complete effort of the Raiders. “I was proud of the way our team played and fought.”
The crowd played its part as well, helping force two delay-of-game penalties on Miami and adding to the atmosphere around a team trying to build something real at home.
“We watched a really cool video about the history of the Black Hole and the Silver and it made a big point of earning our way to make this our house,” said Kubiak on the importance of Raider Nation’s support.
“Just the support we had, how loud it was on the first drive throughout the game, it was special. It’s what this building can be and, obviously, it’s up to us to earn the respect of those fans.”
Now the Raiders turn to the Los Angeles Chargers, who look more vulnerable than expected, with a chance to chase a 2-0 start next Sunday.
