Raiders Fans Just Got A New Reminder Of Al Davis Legacy

Christian Bale takes on the challenge of capturing the legendary and complex Al Davis in the upcoming "Madden" film, promising a layered portrayal of the renowned Raiders owner.

Christian Bale is stepping into one of the NFL’s most recognizable figures for David O. Russell’s new film Madden, and he says Al Davis was far more layered than the legend many fans remember.

Bale discussed the role on SportsCenter with ESPN’s Kevin Negandhi, explaining that Davis was a man who built his way through every corner of the Raiders organization. “Yeah, I mean, the man never backed down from a fight, loved to fight.

That was the story that he would say that his dad never let him back down from a fight, ever. He knew every single role within the Raiders.

You know, he started as a scout, became assistant coach, coach, he'd been general manager, you know, he was a commissioner and then owner. And he wasn't somebody with a lot of money who came in and bought the team.

He earned his way up to have that team. So we understood everything about it.

He was always down on the field,” Bale explained.

He also pointed to Davis’ hard-edged reputation and the loyalty that came with it. “He had that motto, you know, once a Raider, always a Raider.

And he really stood by it. You know, the man said, ‘All right, to get respect, you've got to be feared.’

And I think he liked people to think about him that way. But the people who loved him and knew him very well said he didn't like to broadcast the fact that he had a really big heart and he genuinely took care of everybody who had been in his inner circle within the Raiders.

No matter how many years they've been gone, he still took care of them.

“And incredible things that he did. You know, he wouldn't allow the team to play in cities that segregated players.

And then on top of that, you know, he had this great civil rights record. He was the first owner to hire an African-American coach in Art Shell, a Latino coach in Tom Flores, and a female executive director in Amy Trask.

And they wanted to actually call that the Al Davis rule. And he said, no, no, I don't want that.

Don't give me that credit. So he was a great contradiction, as all good characters are.”

Davis, remembered for his sharp style, his obsession with speed and his “Just win, baby” line, remains one of the defining figures behind the NFL’s rise. Bale’s turn as the Raiders icon will be one of the movie’s biggest draws, and if his past work is any guide, he should have no trouble making the part his own.

Mark Davis Just Weighed In On The Raiders QB Tension

The Raiders quarterback picture has a little more clarity from the top, even if the timetable still feels fluid. In a CNBC interview, owner Mark Davis said he does not feel any pressure to rush rookie Fernando Mendoza onto the field this season, a notable stance for a team trying to balance development with stability at the games most important position.

Davis also framed Kirk Cousins as the kind of veteran presence that can help bridge the gap while Mendoza keeps learning the professional game. He said the rookie is progressing well, but there is no need to force the issue right away, which leaves the Raiders with a patient approach for now and a bigger question still hanging over when the next chapter actually begins. Raiders Face A Brutal Maxx Crosby Decision As Deadline Nears

With the November 10 trade deadline approaching, the Raiders are staring at one of the toughest roster calls they could face. Maxx Crosby is not asking out, and the expectation around the league is still that Las Vegas will keep its All-Pro edge rusher, but the phone lines figure to stay busy after a recent trade involving Jeffery Simmons helped push Crosbys market higher.

The challenge for the Raiders is obvious: Crosby remains central to what they do, especially with the current state of the defensive line, yet his value could be at its peak if the team ever decided to listen. Even with the possibility of significant offers coming in, Las Vegas would have to weigh the immediate hit to its defense against the kind of return it would demand to even consider moving one of the franchises most important players. Raiders Face A Week 9 Decision That Could Reshape Everything

The Raiders Week 8 win over the Jets kept them right in the middle of the AFC race at 4-4, but it also set up a much bigger test for where this season is headed. A trip to face the 49ers in Week 9 now carries more than just the usual Bay Area bragging rights, because the result could help determine whether Las Vegas views itself as a team ready to add or a roster that needs a harder look before the trade deadline.

With a few demanding games still ahead, the front office is weighing how aggressive to be if the Raiders can stay afloat in the playoff picture. The deadline conversation has already turned toward possible help at wide receiver, while a stumble against San Francisco would force a far different kind of discussion about the direction of the roster and which established names might become part of it.
