The Raiders needed a cleaner showing from their young secondary, and Hezekiah Masses delivered it against the Texans.
After a rough preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals, where Masses allowed three catches on three targets for 25 yards, the cornerback answered in a big way in Week 2. Houston targeted him four times, and he gave up just one reception for a single yard. That lone catch produced a passer rating allowed of 39.6 - the same number a quarterback gets when every throw hits the turf.
For a Las Vegas defensive backfield that is still very much a work in progress, that kind of response matters. The room is young, with most of the cornerback and safety group having played fewer than five years in the league and many under two.
There are going to be mistakes. There already were plenty of them in the first preseason game, when the young DBs struggled in man coverage and surrendered multiple touchdowns.
That made a rebound against Houston a must.
Masses, one of the camp standouts, looked like the player who had generated all that buzz. He was sharp in zone coverage, recognizing the action quickly and taking away options for C.J. Stroud, who ended up throwing the ball away on one snap because Masses had the concept covered.
He was even better in man coverage, which was a welcome development after his struggles in the previous game. Masses stayed attached to receivers throughout the night and showed a physical edge that scouts do not always associate with an undersized cornerback out of the University of California. He also finished a tackle on one of his targets, another sign of the work he has been putting in.
During training camp, Masses spoke about his tackling, and that emphasis showed against the Texans. He appeared comfortable in press coverage and played with the kind of confidence the Raiders were hoping to see after the Cardinals game.
The encouraging part for Las Vegas is that Masses was not the only young defender to take a step. Jermod McCoy and Treydan Stukes also turned in better performances, giving the Raiders a chance to see what this group might become if it keeps growing together. That is the long view John Spytek is chasing, and games like this one are the reason for it.
