Raiders Eye AFC West Pass Rusher Linked to Rob Leonard in Free Agency

With nearly $100 million in cap space, the Raiders have a prime opportunity to bolster their pass rush by targeting Chargers' standout Odafe Oweh, leveraging his ties with new defensive coordinator Rob Leonard.

As the NFL free agency period approaches, all eyes are on Las Vegas Raiders' GM John Spytek. With nearly $100 million in cap space, Spytek is poised to make significant moves to bolster the Raiders' roster. In his second year at the helm, Spytek's draft-focused strategy will likely be complemented by strategic acquisitions, especially on the defensive side.

The Raiders' defense needs a boost, particularly in the pass-rush department. Maxx Crosby, with his 10.0 sacks, stood out last season, but the rest of the unit lagged behind.

Malcolm Koonce followed with just 4.5 sacks, highlighting the need for reinforcements. Enter Odafe Oweh, a prime target in free agency.

With 17.5 sacks over two seasons and a solid 7.5 sacks in 12 games last year, Oweh's performance is hard to ignore, especially given his limited playing time.

Oweh's connection with new Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Leonard, from their time with the Baltimore Ravens, adds an intriguing layer to this potential acquisition. Familiarity with Leonard's coaching style could make Oweh an ideal fit in Las Vegas. Additionally, Klint Kubiak can seek insights from Seattle Seahawks' head coach Mike Macdonald, who previously worked with Oweh as the Ravens' defensive coordinator.

Oweh, just 27 as the new season kicks off, showcased his potential with a 73.7 PFF grade and a standout playoff performance for the Chargers, racking up 3.0 sacks and two forced fumbles. His projected market value of three years at $57.97 million fits well within the Raiders' budget, especially if Crosby is moved.

While Koonce has been a fan favorite since his breakout in 2023, his market value of two years at $19.8 million seems steep for his level of production. If the Raiders can secure Oweh, a proven and younger option, it would be a strategic move worth the investment. Strengthening the trenches with a player familiar with Leonard's system could be a game-changer for Las Vegas.
