Raiders Defense May Finally Have The Leader Maxx Crosby Needed

As the Raiders look to revitalize their linebacker core, Nakobe Dean steps up as a pivotal leader alongside Maxx Crosby, transforming the defense's dynamics.

Nakobe Dean is already making his presence felt in Las Vegas, and not just because the Raiders needed help at linebacker.

The Raiders spent part of the offseason trying to clean up a defense that had plenty of problems last season, and one of the bigger moves was bringing in former Georgia teammates Nakobe Dean and Quay Walker. Dean drew some early concern from Raider Nation when he missed offseason work and it looked like an injury situation, but that hasn’t carried into training camp. He’s been healthy so far, and he has been named the defense’s “green dot” player over Walker.

That role is about more than relaying calls. The “green dot” linebacker is supposed to be the communicator, the steady hand, and ideally a true voice for the defense. According to defensive coordinator Rob Leonard, Dean is already showing that kind of presence.

“Command. Confidence,” Leonard said.

“[Dean will say], 'Robbie, get out of my huddle. I got it.'

I want to get up in there and start up, but that's not reality of how the game's played. Just leadership.

It feels good to have that at the mike linebacker.”

That matters in a building where Maxx Crosby has been carrying a huge share of the defensive leadership load. Crosby is still the emotional center of the Raiders, but Leonard’s comments suggest Dean is helping spread that responsibility around.

Bucky Brooks of NFL Network and NFL.com saw that theme during the Raiders’ night practice at Allegiant Stadium before the preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals. The session wasn’t fully padded, so it came with limits, but Brooks still came away noting Dean’s impact.

“The Raiders' underrated signing of Dean not only filled the team's need at middle linebacker, but also filled the leadership void that has been missing on defense,” Brooks wrote. “Despite his diminutive stature, Dean stands out as a fierce competitor and exemplary leader.

He sets the tone with his violent play, yet displays the poise and composure to get the defense into the proper front and coverage based on the offensive formation. Additionally, he will challenge his teammates and hold them accountable for their effort and performance, including Maxx Crosby.”

Crosby will remain the heartbeat of the Raiders’ defense and the team overall for as long as he’s in Silver and Black. But Las Vegas clearly needed more than one voice in that huddle, and Dean appears to be stepping into that space quickly.

For a reconstructed defense under a new coaching staff, that kind of leadership may end up mattering just as much as the play calls themselves.

Khalil Mack Just Added Painful Context To A Trade Raiders Fans Hate

Khalil Macks departure still hangs over the Raiders like one of the franchises biggest modern what-ifs, and his latest comments only sharpen the pain for anyone who lived through the trade. The Raiders shipped Mack and a second-round pick to the Bears for two first-round selections, then turned those assets into Josh Jacobs, Damon Arnette and Bryan Edwards, a move that was supposed to reset the roster while giving Jon Grudens team more long-term control over the draft.

Instead, the deal has aged unevenly, even with Jacobs becoming a rushing champion. Arnette and Edwards never made the kind of impact the Raiders needed, and the broader cost to the defense has kept the trade in the regret category for many fans. Macks reflection on how the separation unfolded adds another layer to a breakup that already felt messy, and it is hard not to look back at that offseason and wonder how differently things might have gone for the Raiders if the relationship had held together a little longer. Maxx Crosbys Von Miller Reaction Says Plenty To Raiders Fans

Von Millers move to Dallas adds another familiar name to the AFC West conversation, even if he is now wearing a different uniform. The veteran pass rusher was a free agent after his season with Washington, and his one-year deal with the Cowboys brings him back to the team he followed growing up in Texas. For Raiders fans, it also brings a reminder of just how much respect Miller still commands around the league, especially among edge defenders who have studied his game for years.

Maxx Crosby is one of them. The Raiders star has been open about the influence Miller has had on his own development, praising Millers mentorship and the way he has shaped parts of Crosbys approach on the field. So when Crosby reacted to the news, it said plenty about the bond between two of the sports most recognizable pass rushers, and about how much Millers presence still resonates with the next generation of defensive stars. Raiders Ground Game Is Finally Showing Signs Fans Have Waited For

For three straight seasons, the Raiders have spent too much time at the wrong end of the rushing conversation, stuck near the bottom of the league and looking for answers up front. This offseason brought a clear attempt to change that, with the addition of offensive line coach Rick Dennison and the signing of center Tyler Linderbaum giving the team a different look and, maybe more important, a different direction.

Training camp and the preseason have offered the kind of early signs Raiders fans have been waiting for, with the ground game showing more life than it has in years. Ashton Jeanty and Mike Washington have both flashed in the backfield, and while August can only tell you so much, the runs have at least hinted that Las Vegas may finally have something worth building on when the games start to count.
