Raiders Could Catch Buffalo At The Perfect Time In Week 6

As the Buffalo Bills contend with critical absences, the Las Vegas Raiders hope to capitalize and snap their losing streak in a pivotal Week 6 match-up.

The Bills may be heading into Sunday’s game against the Raiders short-handed, and the two names causing the biggest concern are the ones Buffalo can least afford to lose.

On Buffalo’s first injury report of Week 6, 15 players were listed. Most of them were able to get on the practice field, but wide receiver DJ Moore and defensive tackle Ed Oliver were the only two who did not participate Wednesday. With two more days of work left before kickoff, those are the situations worth watching most closely.

Both players also sat out Buffalo’s Week 5 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams. Moore is dealing with a shoulder injury, while Oliver is working through a knee issue. Even so, Buffalo found a way to get the win without them.

That doesn’t change how important they are when healthy. The Bills brought in Moore this offseason to serve as their No. 1 receiver, and he opened the year with 12 catches for 178 yards and a touchdown across the first four games. Oliver, meanwhile, has been a fixture in the middle of Buffalo’s defensive line for eight years and has logged nine tackles and a half sack in three appearances this season.

Las Vegas has its own list to manage, though the early signs were a little more encouraging on the Raiders side. The team listed 12 players on its first report of the week, but six were full participants and four were limited. Only two players missed practice entirely.

Those two were defensive tackle Tonka Hemingway and wide receiver Jalen Nailor, both in concussion protocol. Hemingway’s concussion came in Week 5, which means he would need to clear the protocol in a week to have a chance to play Sunday. Nailor suffered his concussion in Week 4, and head coach Klint Kubiak said the team expects to see him back on the practice field this week, giving him a shot to clear the protocol by Sunday.

As for the rest of the Raiders’ notable names, running back Ashton Jeanty was a full participant Wednesday, while tight end Brock Bowers was limited.

The final availability picture won’t come into focus until later in the week, but both teams are dealing with important questions as Las Vegas tries to snap a two-game skid against a Bills team that can still win even if a couple of stars are missing.

Raiders Face A Big Fernando Mendoza Question At Wide Receiver

The Raiders have a quarterback picture that already invites questions, with Kirk Cousins in the starting role and rookie Fernando Mendoza viewed as the long-term answer. Even with that transition in mind, the bigger issue around the offense may be the lack of proven wide receiver help, a problem that has left the front office and observers looking for ways to add a legitimate target to the passing game.

One name that has surfaced in the conversation is a receiver who appears to have slipped in Jacksonville, which is exactly the kind of situation that can spark trade speculation this time of year. For Las Vegas, the appeal is obvious: if the Raiders want to make life easier for Cousins now and for Mendoza down the road, they may need to keep pushing on the market for a receiver who can change the shape of the room, even if the cost and fit remain unsettled. Raiders Offensive Struggles Are Fueling A Quarterback Debate

The Raiders offensive problems have started to reach beyond the usual blame game, with the passing attack and ground game both undercutting any sense of rhythm. Kirk Cousins has had a hard time settling in when defenses turn up the pressure, and the recent stretch has only sharpened the conversation around how the team should handle the quarterback position as it moves forward.

Against that backdrop, Brock Purdy has begun to emerge as a name worth watching for a bigger role if the Raiders decide to change course in the weeks ahead. No official decision has been made, and the team still has time to sort through its options, but the broader issue is clear: the offense has not given the staff much reason to stand pat. Raiders Face One Big Question As Jerry Jeudy Buzz Builds

The Raiders are still searching for more help at wide receiver, and that has only sharpened the focus on Jerry Jeudy now that the Browns reportedly have him available in trade talks. Cleveland is said to be seeking a third- to fourth-round pick, but the broader picture is simple enough for Las Vegas: the roster could use another proven target, and Jeudys name naturally fits a team trying to add receiving talent without waiting for the market to sort itself out.

There is also the internal angle to watch, because Klint Kubiak recently addressed Dont'e Thorntons status as the rookie works his way back from injury. Thornton still has to show he can handle the conditioning, assignments and playmaking piece before the Raiders can count on him as part of the solution, which leaves the front office weighing outside help against the possibility that a young receiver is not quite ready yet.
