The AFC West keeps handing out fresh storylines, and this week the spotlight landed on three very different corners of the division: the Chargers’ offensive line, Travis Kelce’s fast start in Kansas City, and a rookie cornerback making noise in Las Vegas.
In Los Angeles, the Chargers are bracing for a possible change up front. Trevor Penning saw time at both guard spots in Week 2, and head coach Jim Harbaugh said Penning would start in Week 3 if Trey Pipkins (knee) can’t go. Penning said he’s ready for whatever comes next and pointed to the work he’s already put in across the line.
“Not a situation the team wants by losing your starting guard. I was ready, that’s part of the job,” Penning said, via ChargersWire.
“Be ready when unfortunate things happen. I’ve been working at both [guard spots] all camp.”
In Kansas City, Andy Reid offered his explanation for why Travis Kelce has opened the season so strongly, and he tied it to the kind of offseason grind that keeps showing up in Kelce’s game. Reid also brought Taylor Swift into the conversation, saying her work ethic may be rubbing off on the Chiefs tight end.
“So, listen, (Travis) Trav (Kelce) worked his tail off. That’s the bottom line, and I think he probably said it after the game somewhere there, that the amount of work he put in.
He likes his surrounding cast that’s around him too, which sure helps as just an extra challenge there to make sure that you’re up there and competing and doing your part with that other group,” Reid said, via ChiefsWire.com. “So, he takes a lot of pride in that, but I know he really, everybody questioned with the wedding and all that.
Would he be out of shape and honeymooning the whole time and all that, but he works his rear end off and I think Taylor (Swift), you’re putting on four-hour shows. You’ve got to work hard, too.
So, I’m sure she kicks him in the butt a little bit there, too.”
Over in Las Vegas, the Raiders may have found one of the weekend’s biggest defensive bright spots. Fifth-round cornerback Hezekiah Masses picked off two passes in the Raiders’ Week 2 win over the Chargers, and head coach Klint Kubiak said the performance matched what the team has seen since spring.
“That’s kind of the guy we’ve seen since he came here in April,” Kubiak said, via Sam Warren of The Athletic. “He’s been confident, he’s been making plays on the ball.
He’s been instinctual. And it’s one game; we’ve got to go do it again.”
Kubiak also addressed fellow rookie cornerback Jermod McCoy, saying the team plans to keep developing him and give him more opportunities on the field.
“He had very meaningful snaps in the game yesterday,” Kubiak said. “ We’re going to keep building him up, keep building his confidence, and he’s given us confidence to play him more.”
With Darien Porter back from a foot injury, Kubiak said the Raiders’ competition for snaps at cornerback should help raise the level of play across the group.
