FOXBORO - The New England Patriots’ first practice of Week 5 came with a long injury list and a short roster of healthy bodies at a few key spots.
Eight players, including several starters, were out Wednesday as the 2-2 Patriots began turning their attention to the Las Vegas Raiders. Among the biggest names missing were Christian Gonzalez and Christian Barmore, both of whom sat out last week’s win over the Buffalo Bills as well.
Before practice, Mike Vrabel gave a clear hint about where things stood.
"I don’t expect Gonzo to be back out there today. Christian (Barmore) may do some things,"
The Patriots’ cornerback group was hit especially hard. Gonzalez, Marcus Jones, Charles Woods, D.J.
Davis, Kobee Minor and Marcellas Dial were all absent from practice, leaving the team with just four healthy corners working in drills. Those four were Marcus Jones, Charles Woods, Kindle Vildor and Al'Zillion Hamilton, who joined the practice squad yesterday.
Woods was limited because of a stinger he picked up last week. Hamilton’s presence came after his practice squad signing, while the rest of the group tried to patch together a thin position room.
The situation matters because of what the Raiders bring on offense. Las Vegas does not have a deep receiver group - Tre Tucker leads its receivers with 15 catches - but the tight end tandem of Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer drives much of the passing game.
There were also questions about whether the Patriots would start opening practice windows for players on injured reserve. After four weeks, those players are eligible to return to the field, but Vrabel suggested that won’t happen just yet.
"I just think that with the uncertainty here, that probably won’t happen," Vrabel said. "I wouldn’t anticipate that happening.
Those guys have all worked really hard to get back, and it’s just where the situation is with the roster and trying to figure out what we need to do. So, we’ll probably not start those guys practicing."
The players on IR who can now return are offensive tackle Marcus Bryant, linebacker Khalil Jacobs and punter Bryce Baringer. The Patriots also have edge rusher Harold Landry on the physically unable to perform list and safety Brenden Schooler on the non-football injury list, and both are eligible to play. Schooler appears closer to a return than Landry.
New England still has two open spots on the active roster after placing edge rusher Quintayvious Hutchins on IR and releasing edge rusher Jose Ramirez.

Maxx Crosby Just Took The Mahomes Rivalry Somewhere Personal
Maxx Crosby has never been shy about the Patrick Mahomes matchup, but he took the familiar Raiders-Chiefs edge in a more personal direction during an episode of his podcast, The Rush. Crosby talked about the ongoing physical and psychological chess match he and Mahomes seem to play every time they line up across from each other, a rivalry built as much on stubbornness and feel as it is on pass-rush production.
Crosby also pointed to one of the stranger details of the matchup, saying Mahomes makes unusual vocal sounds when he gets tackled. It is the kind of observation that only comes from repeated collisions and plenty of time spent trying to get inside an opponents head, and Crosby has done plenty of both, piling up 6.5 sacks and 49 quarterback pressures against Mahomes in his career. Raiders Loss Put A Few Veterans On Notice Fast
The Raiders first game of the 2026 season against the Chiefs offered an early look at where the roster already looks solid and where the margin for error is thin. A few veterans came out of the opener with some encouragement attached to their names, including Spencer Burford, who held up better in pass protection, while the team also got reminders that one play can tilt a game fast in a division matchup.
Kwity Paye did not make much of an imprint on the defensive side, and Dareke Youngs fumble on a kickoff return became the kind of mistake that can swing momentum before a team has settled in. In a loss that doubled as an evaluation game, the Raiders found enough positives to keep building on, but the individual letdowns also made clear which players will have to answer quickly the next time they take the field. Maxx Crosby Just Added A Wild New Detail To His Mahomes Feud
Maxx Crosbys matchup with Patrick Mahomes has long been one of the NFLs most physical quarterback-pass rusher showdowns, and now Crosby is adding a little more color to it. On an episode of his podcast, The Rush, the Raiders edge rusher talked about the back-and-forth hes had with Mahomes over the years, underscoring how much of their rivalry has played out in the trenches and after the whistle of a hit.
Crosby said Mahomes makes unusual sounds when he gets tackled and noted the Chiefs quarterbacks tendency to look back at him after taking contact. Its the kind of detail that fits a rivalry built on repeated collisions, and Crosby has more than his share of them, with 6.5 sacks and 49 quarterback pressures against Mahomes in his career.
