Fernando Mendoza and Jermod McCoy are finally under contract, and that clears the way for both rookies to get to work as Raiders training camp opens.
Before this week, neither player had signed, which put them in the same slow-moving boat as most of the quarterbacks in the 2026 NFL Draft. McCoy’s wait was tied to his injury history, while Mendoza was among the quarterbacks who took a long time to get their deals done. Now both rookies are officially signed.
July 23 marked the first day of training camp for Raiders rookies, and a few other players were around as well. Maxx Crosby was one of them, and he said on a recent episode of “The Rush” that he would be there from the start.
“I am coming off an injury so I have to go July 23,” Crosby said. “Ultimately I am extremely excited.”
The bigger story for Mendoza is what comes next. Las Vegas has a real quarterback battle this year, unlike last season, and the door is open for the 2026 No. 1 overall pick to push for the job.
Kirk Cousins signed a five-year, $172 million deal, but only one season is guaranteed, which leaves the competition alive. Head coach Klint Kubiak wants Mendoza to sit the full season, but that plan is not locked in.
Aidan O’Connell is also in the mix. He’s in the final year of his rookie contract, and this could be his last shot to earn a role in Sin City. Once the pads come on, the Raiders will let the best player win the job, and Mendoza will have to beat out two veteran quarterbacks to take it.
McCoy’s path is a little different, but just as interesting. Eric Stokes is set as the top cornerback, leaving one starting spot open. Darien Porter, Hezekiah Masses, and McCoy are competing for it, and McCoy may be the most gifted of the three.
Porter had a rough 2025 while learning the position. McCoy brings more experience, but his knee injury hangs over the battle.
Masses is also in the mix, and his mentality helps him make up for being undersized. That makes the cornerback job one of the camp battles worth watching in Las Vegas.
So the question now is simple: between McCoy and Mendoza, who has the better chance to start this season?
