The Raiders are heading into training camp with one of their most intriguing battles parked right in the middle of the offensive line, and Jackson Powers-Johnson is suddenly at the center of it.
Right guard is the spot drawing the most attention as camp opens Tuesday, with rookies having reported Thursday. Powers-Johnson and Carlos Rogers are viewed as the leading candidates to start, and after OTAs, Powers-Johnson appeared to have a slight edge.
But that edge hasn’t exactly held up in the chatter around the team. Just like last season, questions about Powers-Johnson’s standing have started to surface again, and Raiders insider Jesse Merrick said on Monday that the conversation around the former second-round pick has turned uneasy.
“I just get the feeling that Burford could be in the guy there at left guard. To me, right guard is where it’s really interesting.
And the real question there, JPJ has to prove that he can stay healthy and play clean football. We know that he’s had some issues with flags and things like that,” Merrick said on the Silver & Black Sports Network podcast.
He went a step further in describing what he’s hearing.
“Everyone I talk to leads me to believe that JPJ is on shaky ground. I’m not fully there yet, but I’m starting to warm to that idea as much as I don’t want to.
It honestly makes me think that the battle with him, third round pick Trey Zuhn and Caleb Rogers is very real and makes that all the more interesting as that pans out. Also too, don’t rule out Zuhn and maybe even Caleb [Rogers] competing at left guard as well.
I think both of those guys have the versatility to play both guard spots.”
Powers-Johnson didn’t ignore the moment. He was among the few veterans who reported with the rookies on Thursday, a sign that he’s getting ahead of the competition rather than waiting for it to come to him.
And this part of his story isn’t new. Even last year, under former head coach Pete Carroll, Powers-Johnson was careful with his public comments and never seemed to say the wrong thing. Now, the third-year mauler is trying to change the conversation around him again, and the next few weeks should bring a hard-edged battle for playing time.
