The Las Vegas Raiders have had no shortage of turbulence in 2025, and much of it has stemmed from the coaching staff. Expectations were high when Pete Carroll took the reins and brought in a revamped, diverse group of assistants.
But instead of a turnaround, Raider Nation has been left with more questions than answers. The recent firings of offensive coordinator Chip Kelly and special teams coordinator Tom McMahon speak volumes about the state of things in Vegas.
And with the season winding down, all eyes are now on Carroll’s future.
But even in a year marked by instability and unmet expectations, there have been a few bright spots on the Raiders’ sideline - specifically in the form of two position coaches who are starting to draw serious attention across the league.
Luke Steckel and Rob Leonard: Rising names in NFL coaching circles
Tight ends coach Luke Steckel has been turning heads thanks to the breakout rookie season of Brock Bowers. Steckel, who joined the Raiders in 2024, has helped unlock Bowers’ potential in a big way.
And while Bowers’ talent is undeniable, Steckel’s role in developing the young star hasn’t gone unnoticed. Around league circles, Steckel is viewed as a rising offensive mind - someone who’s been steadily building a résumé since entering the NFL coaching ranks in 2013.
His background, which includes being the son of former NFL head coach Les Steckel, adds another layer of football pedigree to the mix.
On the defensive side, Rob Leonard - the Raiders’ defensive line coach and run game coordinator - is also generating buzz. Leonard, who came aboard in 2023 under Josh McDaniels, is known for his strong rapport with players, particularly star edge rusher Maxx Crosby.
He was even in the mix for the Raiders’ defensive coordinator job last offseason. Leonard’s experience includes time under Brian Flores in Miami, where he helped shape a defense that played fast and physical - traits that have shown up in flashes with this Raiders front.
Coordinator shake-up could open doors - or close them
With Chip Kelly out and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham’s future in limbo, Las Vegas could be staring at three coordinator vacancies heading into the offseason. That opens the door for internal promotions - possibly for Steckel or Leonard - but whether the organization sees them as part of the long-term vision remains to be seen.
Both coaches have already weathered regime changes. Leonard stuck around after McDaniels’ departure, and Steckel was brought in under Antonio Pierce before Carroll took over.
That kind of staying power says something about their value, even amid the chaos. But as the Raiders potentially head toward another reset, the question becomes: will they be retained, promoted, or pursued elsewhere?
The bottom line
For a team that’s struggled to find consistency on the sidelines, Steckel and Leonard have been rare sources of stability and development. Whether or not the Raiders make sweeping changes again in 2026, holding onto these two coaches - if possible - would be a smart move.
Of course, that decision may not be entirely up to Las Vegas. With the league watching, Steckel and Leonard could have opportunities to climb the ladder elsewhere.
And given how this season has gone for the Raiders, it’s hard to blame them if they do.
