Raiders Add Fullback as Offensive Overhaul Gains Momentum

Raiders bolster their offensive lineup by signing fullback Connor Heyward, aiming to enhance blocking support for Jeanty and strengthen their evolving strategy.

The Las Vegas Raiders are making moves to bolster their blocking game, and they've just signed fullback Connor Heyward to a two-year deal. This move, reported by NFL insiders, comes with a potential value of $5.5 million, with $2 million guaranteed. It's a strategic addition aimed at enhancing their offensive line and providing crucial support for running back Ashton Jeanty.

Heyward, who spent his entire career with the Pittsburgh Steelers since being drafted in 2022, is known for his reliability-he's played every game over four seasons. Initially utilized as a receiver, Heyward's standout year was 2023 with 23 receptions, though his receiving numbers have dipped since. However, he added a new dimension to his game last season with some impressive pass-blocking skills, earning top grades from Pro Football Focus.

The Steelers were reportedly keen on retaining Heyward, but Raiders' coach Klint Kubiak saw an opportunity to integrate him into their offense. Heyward is expected to create running lanes for Jeanty and provide protection for the new quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, and any other quarterbacks the Raiders might bring in.

The Raiders haven't featured a prominent fullback since the days of Josh McDaniels, whose tenure lacked consistent production. This signing represents a shift in focus for the team, aiming to revitalize their offense.

Financially, this deal is a smart move that doesn't interfere with the Raiders' ongoing overhaul of their offensive line. With left tackle Kolton Miller returning from injury and center Tyler Linderbaum secured with a record-breaking contract, the Raiders are clearly committed to strengthening their front line.

While major signings may be off the table for now, the Raiders are likely to target offensive line talent in the upcoming draft. Their plans to acquire additional draft picks were thwarted when a trade involving defensive end Maxx Crosby fell through, but the focus remains on building a formidable line to support their offensive ambitions.
