The Raiders didn’t just add a linebacker this offseason. They put the middle of their defense in Nakobe Dean’s hands, and two games in, he’s already making that investment look smart.
Dean’s latest statement came in Las Vegas’ Week 2 win over the Chargers, and it was the kind of snap that tells you everything about why a team wants him calling the shots in the middle. With the Raiders protecting a 17-14 lead late in the fourth quarter, Los Angeles faced third-and-2 at its own 28-yard line.
Justin Herbert handed off to Omarion Hampton, but Dean read it instantly, slid from the B-gap into the A-gap and met Hampton at the line for no gain. The stop forced a punt and gave Las Vegas another big defensive moment in a game it needed.
That play fit the early theme. In his first two games with the Raiders, Dean has piled up 15 tackles, 1.5 sacks, four pressures and two forced fumbles. He’s been affecting all three levels of the defense, helping against the run, getting into the backfield and keeping everything organized in front of him.
“He’s been the glue to our defense,” safety Jeremy Chinn told ESPN. “It’s crazy how much a linebacker in the middle of the field can make such a difference in the back end and front end.”
Las Vegas gave Dean a three-year, $36 million deal after he spent four seasons with the Eagles. His time in Philadelphia came with injury interruptions, but he still managed 226 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles in 47 games, with 27 starts.
The Raiders weren’t alone in the mix. Dean reportedly had interest from the Cowboys before choosing Las Vegas after weighing his options and praying over the decision.
He also arrived in a linebacker room that got another boost with the addition of Quay Walker, giving defensive coordinator Rob Leonard two prime-age pieces to build around. After leaning on short-term veteran answers last season, the Raiders have clearly tried to reset the position with younger players who can carry more of the load.
It’s only been two weeks, but Dean has already shown the Raiders exactly what they were paying for: leadership, toughness and the kind of timely play that can swing a drive.
