The NFL is hitting Maxx Crosby where it hurts most: his wallet.
After the Las Vegas Raiders were blown out 45-17 by the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium, the league fined Crosby $23,882 for his actions early in the game. The penalty came out of a first-quarter sequence that spilled into a brief skirmish after a play and a pile-up on the field.
When players began getting back to their feet, Crosby was already upright and headbutted Patriots defensive tackle Cory Durden. A referee was right there to see it. The hit drew a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty, and the NFL confirmed the fine in its Week 5 accountability report on Saturday.
Crosby’s punishment stood out even in a week full of discipline for helmet-related hits. He was one of several players fined in Week 5, but according to the league’s report, his was the largest individual fine for any incident during the week. New York Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was fined twice for actions in a game against the Cleveland Browns, with those two fines totaling more than Crosby’s single hit.
The Raiders star is in his eighth season with the team and is already a five-time Pro Bowl selection. Crosby, 29, rejoined the Raiders this offseason after the Baltimore Ravens backed out of their trade for him because of a failed physical.
On the field, he has nine total tackles, including three solo tackles, along with two sacks for a Raiders team that sits at 3-2 after opening the season with three straight wins.
The loss to New England followed another setback one week earlier, when Las Vegas fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in a tight division matchup. Crosby had one tackle in that game.
Now the Raiders are headed back home, but Week 6 brings another tough test. Las Vegas hosts Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Oct. 18, with Buffalo entering at 4-1 and leading the AFC East.

Raiders Offense Faces Growing Pressure In A Brutal Spot Against Buffalo
The Raiders head into Week 7 with plenty of offensive urgency and not much margin for error, trying to keep a losing streak from stretching to three games against a Buffalo team that rarely hands out easy answers. Las Vegas has been sorting through uneven play and injury concerns while trying to get more out of a group that includes Kirk Cousins, rookie Fernando Mendoza, Ashton Jeanty, Brock Bowers and Tre Tucker.
Cousins has taken the bulk of the attention because of how the offense has looked around him, but the bigger issue is getting the whole unit back on schedule before the matchup with the Bills turns into another long afternoon. Jeantys health is part of that picture, along with the need for Bowers and Tucker to be more central to what the Raiders do, and the pressure only grows from there if Las Vegas cannot find a cleaner rhythm soon. Raiders Defense Faces Its Biggest Test Yet Against Josh Allen
The Raiders defense spent the early part of the 2026 season looking like one of the better units in the league, but the recent stretch has been a reminder of how quickly the week-to-week grind can change. After giving up high point totals to the Chiefs and Patriots, Las Vegas now turns to Buffalo, where the challenge gets much steeper against one of the NFLs most dangerous offenses.
Josh Allen and Joe Brady bring a different kind of test, the sort that forces a defense to be sharp on every snap and disciplined in every gap. Defensive coordinator Rob Leonard is sorting through his options as the Raiders try to steady things again, knowing the Bills can beat teams in a variety of ways and leave little margin for error. Raiders Need Surprise Standouts Fast Against A Bills Test They Can't Dodge
Two straight losses have left the Raiders heading into Buffalo needing answers in a hurry, and the margin for error against the Bills is already thin. Las Vegas has been searching for a spark in a few different places, with the running game, the tight end room and the secondary all under the microscope as the team tries to find someone who can tilt the next matchup.
Washington looks like the back in line for a larger role while Ashton Jeanty continues to work back from injury, giving the Raiders a chance to reshape the ground game if they can lean on the right runner. Thomas is another name worth watching after a quiet start to the season, and Stukes could be asked to help the defense create the kind of turnovers that can keep Buffalo's offense from settling in.
