Maxx Crosby And Kirk Cousins Set A Fierce Tone At Raiders Camp

A clash between Maxx Crosby and Kirk Cousins at Raiders camp revs up the competitive energy, offering a taste of the fiery intensity brewing within the team.

The Las Vegas Raiders finally got a little edge in camp Friday, and it came from two of the biggest names on the roster.

During a padded practice in Las Vegas, Maxx Crosby and Kirk Cousins got into a dustup that went well beyond jawing. Hands got involved, though it stopped short of punches. For a team that had mostly kept things tidy through camp, it was a jolt of fire that showed up right when the heat was building.

The sequence started in a two-minute drill. Multiple reports said Crosby hit Cousins on the arm as the quarterback was throwing, leading to an interception by Jeremy Chinn.

It also wasn’t the first time Crosby had gotten to Cousins’ arm during the session. Cousins took issue with it, the two started arguing, and Cousins even grabbed Crosby by the collar.

That kind of moment stands out in camp, especially when it involves a starting quarterback. Still, Klint Kubiak didn’t sound alarmed when asked about it.

"That's training camp," Kubiak told reporters. "Those are two leaders of our team going at it.

So, that is part of camp. Obviously, you fight in the game, you throw a punch in the game, especially, you're out of the game.

So, we got to be smart. Treat it like a game."

Cousins had a rough stretch in that practice, throwing multiple interceptions, and Crosby’s pressure on his throwing arm clearly didn’t help. But the veteran quarterback responded, and The Athletic’s Sam Warren said Cousins looked "surgical" the rest of the way through the two-minute drill.

The exchange also seemed to win Cousins some respect in the huddle. Michael Mayer made it clear he liked the edge.

"It's energy, man. It's energy," Michael Mayer said to the media.

"That's our starting quarterback right now, and you want him to defend your team. You want him to have some edge to him, which he does.

He's always had that, since the first day I met him when he came in here. I don't want him getting thrown out, I don't want him getting a flag.

But you gotta defend yourself."

Crosby was later pulled for the rest of practice, according to Silver & Black Sports Network’s Jesse Merrick. But by then, the message had already been sent. The veteran leaders had brought some heat, and both sides of the ball felt it.

There was another skirmish later in the day, too. Warren also reported that guard Caleb Rogers and defensive tackle Jonah Laulu got into a scuffle, and Laulu threw a punch at Rogers before it was shut down quickly.

For a camp that had been mostly about ordinary training camp business - positional battles and injury absences - Friday brought a different kind of tone. Kubiak may not be the loudest voice in the room, but his veteran players clearly picked up the slack.

That includes Crosby, who has built a reputation for being a constant nuisance in practice. Cousins got a taste of that on Friday, and while nobody wants it to spiral into something bigger, Raiders fans probably won’t mind seeing a little more of that kind of bite.

Raiders Fans Know Why Geno Smith Camp Buzz Means Very Little

Training camp optimism can make just about any quarterback look ready for a comeback, and Geno Smith is already drawing the kind of buzz he once did with the Raiders before the 2025 season. Back then, the early talk around Smith in Las Vegas was upbeat enough to suggest the fit might work, especially with a new environment and fresh expectations. It was the sort of preseason enthusiasm that can be easy to buy into when practices are just beginning and the mistakes are easier to overlook.

Raiders fans have seen how quickly that kind of narrative can fade. Smiths first year in Las Vegas brought plenty of problems, including interceptions and sacks that undercut the promise of those early reports, and that memory makes the current Jets chatter hard to take at face value. New York does have a better supporting cast and coaching setup than it did before, which gives Smith a better runway, but the real question for anyone watching from afar is whether the same camp glow will hold once the games start counting. Raiders Want Fans To Stay Patient With Fernando Mendoza

Training camp has only just begun for the Raiders, but the early focus is already on Fernando Mendoza and the long runway the rookie quarterback is expected to travel. Klint Kubiak has made it clear that the plan is not to rush him, with Kirk Cousins lined up to start in Week 1 while Mendoza works behind the scenes and absorbs everything he can from the veteran presence in the room.

For Raiders fans hoping for immediate answers at quarterback, patience is part of the assignment. The coaching staff sees Mendoza as a player with franchise-level potential, but the emphasis right now is on development, repetition and steady progress rather than a fast-track rise. In other words, this is shaping up as a season where the Raiders are asking supporters to watch the process closely and trust what the staff believes they already see. [Read more 🡒]

Raiders May Finally Be Getting A Real Read On Jackson Powers-Johnson

Jackson Powers-Johnson is getting a fresh start in Raiders training camp, and this time the evaluation feels more straightforward. A new coaching staff, a healthier body and a clearer competition at right guard have given Las Vegas a better chance to see what the young offensive lineman can really become after two seasons defined by position changes and injury.

The early signs have been encouraging, with coaches noting his progress and the sense that his development is moving in the right direction. Even so, the Raiders are still sorting out the offensive line picture, and Powers-Johnson remains one of the more important pieces to watch as camp unfolds. [Read more 🡒]
