With John Harbaugh officially in place as the new head coach of the New York Giants, the next big step is assembling a staff that can help turn the tide for a franchise hungry for stability and success. And right now, all eyes are on two key coordinator spots - and on a few familiar names from Harbaugh’s Baltimore days who could be making the move with him to the Meadowlands.
One name that’s drawing plenty of attention: Anthony Weaver. The former Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator has emerged as a potential fit for Harbaugh’s staff in New York - but there’s a twist.
Weaver is still in the running for multiple head coaching jobs around the league, including openings with the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, and Pittsburgh Steelers. He’s already completed a second interview with the Ravens, and another second-round interview is lined up with Pittsburgh.
So, while the Giants would love to bring him aboard, there’s a good chance he ends up with a top job of his own.
But if those head coaching opportunities don’t materialize, there’s a real possibility Weaver could reunite with Harbaugh in New York - and that would be a big-time addition for Big Blue.
Weaver and Harbaugh have history. The two worked together for three seasons in Baltimore, where Weaver served as the defensive line coach, run-game coordinator, and eventually assistant head coach. That shared experience - and the trust that comes with it - could make for a smooth transition if Weaver ends up running the Giants’ defense.
And make no mistake: Weaver can coach. His most recent work in Miami speaks volumes.
In 2024, the Dolphins’ defense ranked fourth in total yards allowed per game, 10th in points allowed, and cracked the top 10 in both rushing and passing defense. That’s the kind of balance and toughness that the Giants have been missing on that side of the ball.
If Harbaugh is looking to build a defense that can go toe-to-toe with the NFC’s best, Weaver would be a rock-solid foundation.
But the potential reunion tour doesn’t end there. Another former Ravens coach - Todd Monken - is also believed to be in the mix for a return to the NFL stage, this time as the Giants’ offensive coordinator. Monken, who previously served as Baltimore’s OC, is widely considered the frontrunner for the same role under Harbaugh in New York.
If Harbaugh does land both Weaver and Monken, it would signal a clear direction for the Giants - one rooted in continuity, proven coaching chops, and a shared vision. After years of inconsistency, New York could be building something stable and sustainable.
Of course, there are still moving parts. Weaver’s future hinges on those head coaching interviews, and Monken’s next step hasn’t been finalized. But if things fall into place, Harbaugh could be bringing some serious firepower with him to the Giants sideline - and that could be the first real sign that this franchise is ready to turn the corner.
