Derek Carr Reopens Painful Raiders Split With Josh McDaniels

Derek Carr reveals the last thing he sought from Coach McDaniels as tensions and unexpected decisions marked his final days with the Raiders.

Four years later, Derek Carr is still opening up about how his Raiders run ended - and the most revealing part is what he wanted from Josh McDaniels in that final meeting.

Carr was informed on December 28, 2022, by McDaniels and then general manager Dave Ziegler that he would be benched. This week, Carr said on the Get Got podcast that he wanted one thing above all else: two more chances to play.

“I would have signed a waiver. I would have done anything just to say, ‘I don’t care about it just let me play these last two games.

I mean we’re two games away. You know, let me play these last two.

If we want to part ways, that’s fine. Just let me finish with all the work that I’ve put in with my guys.'”

Carr said on the Get Got podcast.

He also recalled McDaniels’ explanation for the move.

“And when I sat down with Josh [McDaniels] and he was like, ‘Look, we’re out of it. We have two games left.

We just want to see what we have in each other two. And I was like, ‘Guys, I understand that.

I don’t agree and I’m not down with that at all.”

Carr had touched on that conversation before, including in August, when he described asking, in effect, why the decision was being made.

“I was like ‘Why?’ and they were like ‘Honestly, we want to see what these two guys can do so we know what we have going into next year,”” Carr said in August of his conversation with McDaniels and Ziegler.

“And I said ‘Hey, That’s your decision. Ok.

Got it. I’m a grown man.

I’m not going to sit here and try to talk you out of a decision you want to make.’”

Carr has since said he and McDaniels are on good terms, but the partnership never clicked in Las Vegas. McDaniels also didn’t appear to be a fit across the locker room before his tenure with the Raiders ended on Halloween of 2023.

Raiders Run Game Suddenly Puts Ashton Jeanty Under Real Pressure

As the Raiders try to steady their ground game, Ashton Jeanty has found himself at the center of a familiar kind of NFL critique, the sort that usually comes when production and expectations start to drift apart. Former Raiders guard Richie Incognito weighed in on Jeantys early struggles, and his comments pointed to a back who is getting opportunities but not always turning them into the kind of yardage the offense needs, while also floating Mike Washington Jr. as a possible change-of-pace option.

The larger concern for Las Vegas is that Jeanty is dealing with crowded looks more often than most runners, with defenses stacking the box and making every handoff feel a little harder than it should be. That leaves the Raiders with some decisions to make as they head into upcoming games, from how they distribute carries to how they sort out the blocking in front of him, because the run game may not get cleaner unless the pieces around Jeanty start to fit better. Ashton Jeanty Just Added Real Heat To Raiders Jets Week

Ashton Jeanty added a little edge to Raiders-Jets week after practice, signaling that he expects Las Vegas to sharpen up its ground game against New York on Sunday. The running back, who usually keeps his pregame comments fairly measured, said the Raiders should be able to get the run game going and get themselves back on track against a Jets defense that will be trying to set a tone early.

Jeanty also hinted that some Jets defenders are not eager to finish tackles, though he stopped short of naming anyone in particular. It was a notable bit of confidence from a player who does not often go looking for headlines before kickoff, and it gives this matchup a little extra spice as the Raiders try to turn that belief into production on the field. Raiders Face A Tense Brock Bowers Question Before Jets Game

The Raiders slide has turned their next step into more than just another chance to stop the bleeding. After opening 3-0, Las Vegas has dropped four straight, and now the focus has shifted to the health of Brock Bowers, the tight end who has become central to the offense heading into a matchup with the Jets.

Bowers showed up on the latest injury report as limited in practice because of a calf injury, which is exactly the kind of detail the Raiders cannot afford to gloss over this late in the week. Further updates are expected as the team moves closer to game time, and for a club trying to get back on track, his availability could shape a lot of what comes next. [Read more 🡒]
