Carson Beck Timeline Just Became A Real Cardinals Debate

A wave of rookie quarterbacks, including top pick Fernando Mendoza and Carson Beck, are poised for game time as pressure mounts on teams to rethink their roster strategies.

Through seven weeks, the 2026 rookie quarterback class still hasn’t made much of a dent in the league’s starting lineups. Ten quarterbacks were taken in this year’s draft, and none had opened a game as a starter by the end of Week 7. The lone exception among rookies to actually start this season is the Buccaneers’ Jalon Daniels, the undrafted former Kansas star who went 1-2 while filling in for an injured Baker Mayfield.

That leaves plenty of attention on the quarterbacks who are waiting in the wings, especially Fernando Mendoza, Carson Beck, Cade Klubnik and Cole Payton. Mendoza has already seen a little action, making his debut in mop-up duty in New England in Week 5, but the bigger question is when the rest of this group gets real opportunities. Here’s how the next stretch could unfold for each of them.

For the Raiders, Mendoza looks like the rookie most likely to force the issue first. Las Vegas started 3-0, then slid to 3-4, and while minority owner Tom Brady and coach Klint Kubiak wanted to keep Mendoza behind Kirk Cousins as long as possible, that plan may not hold forever. Cousins has played well enough that quarterback is not the source of the collapse; the run defense and running game have been the bigger problems during the four-game losing streak.

Still, the Raiders’ schedule is about to get rough. They face the Jets, 49ers, Seahawks, Broncos and Browns over their next five games, and it would not be a shock if they’re sitting at 4-8 or worse when Week 13 bye week arrives.

Cousins can keep going while the Raiders still have something to chase in the wild-card race, but the back half of the schedule opens a cleaner runway for Mendoza. From Week 14 on, Las Vegas gets three straight home games, plus meetings with the Titans and Cardinals before what could be a resting Chiefs team in Week 18.

That stretch would give Mendoza a chance to get rolling before Year 2.

Arizona feels like the most obvious place for a change as well. Carson Beck is waiting behind Jacoby Brissett, who has been throwing a ton - his 282 attempts lead the league - but the production hasn’t matched the volume.

The Cardinals are still passing at a 62 percent rate under new coach Mike LaFleur, though Brissett is down to 5.6 yards per attempt, and the deep-ball element has largely disappeared with too much going through tight end Trey McBride. Arizona is 2-5, buried in a tough NFC West, and Brissett is under contract only through this season.

Beck, a former Miami and Georgia standout, reportedly had a strong offseason and brings a bigger arm and more willingness to attack downfield. The Cardinals do have a late bye in Week 14, but waiting that long would be too much.

A start after the Cowboys game makes more sense than tossing him into one of the trickier defensive matchups that follow. Week 12 at home against the Commanders looks like the cleanest fit, ahead of home games against the Eagles and then the bye.

After that, Arizona gets the Jets, Saints and Raiders, a stretch that could help the team decide whether Beck deserves a real chance to be the answer in 2027.

In New York, the Jets have a different kind of dilemma. Geno Smith has held down the offense for a 2-5 team whose playoff hopes are fading quickly, and he’s done enough to help steady things around the young playmakers. But Smith is signed only through 2026, and Cade Klubnik, the Clemson product, has already shown enough in practice to earn the top backup job.

As long as Aaron Glenn is coaching the team, he’s likely to keep leaning on Smith as the best option to win games. The schedule now brings a “revenge” game against the Raiders in Week 8, then tougher trips to the Chiefs and a home date with the Bills.

After that, the Jets see the Chargers and Dolphins on the road in Weeks 11 and 12. That may be the right time to give Klubnik a look, especially with the Week 13 bye coming up right after.

New York may be headed toward taking another quarterback high in the 2027 draft, but there’s still value in finding out what it has in Klubnik first.

The Eagles are in a mess of their own, and that opens the door for Cole Payton. Tanner McKee is 0-2 as the starter, and Philadelphia’s offense has been stuck behind a reshuffled offensive line, an injury-hit receiver room and a running back group that can’t stay healthy. At 2-5, with the defense not helping matters, Nick Sirianni’s team looks like it is drifting into lost-season territory.

McKee is set to be a free agent in 2027, and the Eagles already elevated Joe Milton III to the No. 2 spot before the Monday night game against Dallas, with Payton listed as the emergency third quarterback. The conventional move would be to give Milton the next shot if McKee keeps struggling.

But Payton is the one with the rushing ability the offense has missed without Jalen Hurts. He ran for 777 yards and 13 touchdowns in his final season at North Dakota State, and he clocked a 4.56-second 40-yard dash at the Combine.

With Philadelphia fading out of the NFC race, the team should be looking ahead, not just trying to survive the week. That means thinking about young players and, maybe, being active at the trade deadline.

It also means getting a longer look at Payton. A start would make sense sooner rather than later, though the more realistic window is after the Week 10 bye.

Raiders Already Have A Kirk Cousins Decision Looming

Kirk Cousins has given the Raiders a steadier hand at quarterback, but his presence has also created an early fork in the road for a team that is still balancing the present against the future. With rookie Fernando Mendoza waiting behind him, Las Vegas is already facing the kind of decision that can shape a season long before the calendar gets deep into fall.

An NFL analyst has even raised the possibility that Cousins could become a trade target before the Nov. 10 deadline, which would instantly add another layer to how the Raiders view their quarterback room. The other path is simpler, and maybe more practical in the short term: keep Cousins in place and let him serve as the veteran guide while Mendoza continues to learn with little NFL experience under his belt. Raiders Next Game Could Change Everything Around Maxx Crosby Rumors

Four straight losses have pushed the Raiders into a difficult spot, and the next game against the Jets now carries a little more weight than a typical midseason matchup. Team analyst Kirk Morrison called it a must-win, and with the trade deadline drawing closer, the result could shape how aggressively the Raiders approach the roster in the days ahead.

Naturally, that has fed the chatter around Maxx Crosby, whose name is always going to come up when a struggling team starts to wonder about its long-term direction. There is no confirmed trade decision, and the speculation remains just that for now, but the broader uncertainty around the Raiders makes this a situation worth watching closely. [Read more 🡒]

Raiders Suddenly Have A WR Problem They Cant Ignore

The Raiders four-game slide has exposed problems all over the roster, but the receiver room is now under a sharper microscope as the offense struggles to find reliable answers. Former Raider Lincoln Kennedy was particularly blunt after the loss to the Rams, pointing to a group that did not consistently separate or make life easier on the quarterback, which only adds to the unease around a unit that has not lived up to the moment.

Tre Tucker has been the clear bright spot at the position, and his recent play has only strengthened the sense that the Raiders need to make a priority out of keeping him around. With free agency approaching, the team is reportedly focused on re-signing him before he can test the market, a signal that Tucker may be the one wideout they can least afford to lose if this offense is going to have any stability going forward.
