The Los Angeles Chargers have their sights set on Mike McDaniel to run their offense, but that plan may be on hold - and possibly slipping away - as McDaniel continues to explore head-coaching opportunities across the league.
While McDaniel is reportedly expected to accept the Chargers’ offensive coordinator role, the deal isn’t done. In fact, it’s contingent on whether he lands a head-coaching job elsewhere. According to reports, McDaniel is set to interview with the Buffalo Bills for their head-coaching vacancy, keeping his options open as the coaching carousel spins deeper into January.
The Bills job is one of the most attractive openings left on the board. With a franchise quarterback in Josh Allen and a roster built to contend now, Buffalo offers McDaniel a chance to step back into a head-coaching role with a team that’s ready to win. That kind of opportunity doesn’t come around often, and it’s easy to see why it would take precedence over a coordinator position - even one with a promising team like the Chargers.
If McDaniel doesn’t land a head-coaching gig, he’s expected to pivot to the Chargers and take over their offense. But that’s a big “if,” especially with multiple teams still in the mix.
In addition to the Bills, McDaniel remains a candidate for the Las Vegas Raiders’ head-coaching job. That opening comes with its own appeal: ample cap space and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft - a pick widely expected to be used on quarterback Fernando Mendoza. That’s a rare level of control and flexibility for any incoming head coach.
McDaniel had also been in the running for jobs with the Falcons, Ravens, and Titans, but those seats have since been filled. He was even lined up for a second interview with the Browns before withdrawing from consideration - a clear sign that he’s zeroing in on specific opportunities.
For the Chargers, this is a bit of a waiting game - and not a comfortable one. They’re in the market for a fresh offensive identity, and McDaniel’s creative, quarterback-friendly system would be a strong fit. But the longer he remains in play for head-coaching jobs, the more uncertain that future becomes.
Bottom line: McDaniel’s next move could shape not just one team’s direction, but several. If he lands in Buffalo or Vegas, he’ll be leading a franchise.
If not, the Chargers may get the offensive architect they’ve been eyeing. Either way, his decision is going to ripple across the league - and it’s coming soon.
