The Chicago Bears were in the hunt for a major defensive upgrade earlier this offseason, eyeing none other than the Las Vegas Raiders' standout defensive end, Maxx Crosby. This revelation comes from ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, who reported that Bears General Manager Ryan Poles confirmed their interest.
Poles shared, “We were involved. We checked into it.
We looked to see if it made sense. Had some dialogue.
I'll leave it at that." This candid admission highlights the Bears' proactive approach in bolstering their defensive line.
The Bears, much like the Dallas Cowboys, struggled last season with only 35 sacks. That’s a stat that simply won’t cut it if they aim to compete at a higher level.
Crosby, a force on the field who often faces double teams, recorded at least 10 sacks for the fourth time in seven seasons. It's no wonder he caught Chicago's eye.
However, financial constraints seem to have thrown a wrench in the Bears’ plans. ESPN’s Adam Schefter pointed out that the Bears are currently not in a position to make such a high-profile acquisition.
“The Bears don't have any more money right now,” Schefter noted. “They're broke.
They're out of money.”
To add another layer to the story, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported that the Raiders have communicated to other teams that Crosby is off the trading block following the collapse of a potential deal with the Baltimore Ravens. This effectively shuts the door on any hopes the Bears had of bringing in the veteran defensive powerhouse.
In the world of NFL trades, timing and financial flexibility are everything. While the Bears’ interest in Crosby underscores their commitment to strengthening their defense, it seems this particular opportunity has slipped through their fingers - at least for now.
