Antonio Brown is telling a very different version of his Raiders exit than the one most fans remember.
In a recently published video on X posted by @cptdankkk, Brown said he walked away from $30 million guaranteed on purpose because the money no longer mattered to him. What he wanted, he said, was a shot at a Super Bowl ring alongside Tom Brady.
“I go to Oakland, I get a big deal. I love Mark Davis, I love Jon Gruden,” Brown said. “But in my mind, as a player, you’re thinking, ‘Yo, I want to be a champion.'”
Brown framed the decision as a choice he made after already earning plenty in Pittsburgh. In his telling, the move away from the Raiders was not a breakdown, but a sacrifice.
“I could’ve just said, ‘Yo, my back hurt,’ and got the $30 million,” he said. “I told Mark Davis, ‘I don’t want to be a Raider. Save him his money.'”
That version doesn’t line up with the memory most people have of the Raiders’ short-lived Brown experiment. The hot air balloon entrance to camp, the frostbitten feet from cryotherapy, the helmet saga, the missed practices, and the clash with then-general manager Mike Mayock all became part of the story. The Raiders eventually voided Brown’s guaranteed money after fines piled up, and Brown asked for his release before he ever played a regular-season game.
Jon Gruden, for his part, has continued to speak highly of Brown’s talent even while calling the episode one of the biggest disappointments of his coaching career. On Cam Heyward’s Not Just Football podcast, Gruden said he believed the situation would settle once the team got Brown to opening night.
“I kept telling my guys, ‘We’re just gonna get him to Sunday,'” Gruden said. “I just knew he could be spectacular in our offense.”
Gruden also said he still has practice footage of Brown and still views him as one of the most naturally gifted route runners he’s ever coached.
Whether Brown’s version is the real story or just hindsight doing the heavy lifting, it’s hard to square it with what unfolded in real time. The fines, the disputes, and the chaos are still the part people remember.
Seven years later, the Antonio Brown era in Oakland still hasn’t faded.
