Will Stein is on a recruiting tear, and it's turning heads across the college football landscape. The head coach of the Wildcats is seemingly everywhere, juggling spring practices, film sessions with elite prospects, and media appearances to share his vision for the program.
After a two-day visit, Rivals’ No. 2 QB Jake Nawrot captured the essence of the experience: “Loved being around the coaches and their complex brains.”
The QB Renaissance
For a couple of years, Kentucky leaned heavily on the transfer portal, a strategy that suited Mark Stoops well. The focus was more on securing players who were ready to contribute immediately rather than investing in high school prospects.
While this approach brought in seasoned talent, it left the 2026 class with only 15 players after Stein made some strategic recruit flips. Stein is determined to change that narrative.
Currently, the Wildcats are in hot pursuit of three of the top 10 quarterbacks in the nation. Alongside Nawrot, they’re making strides with 4-star QB Israel Abrams, who recently included Kentucky in his final five.
Abrams, hailing from Illinois with two state titles under his belt, spent quality time with Stein and Offensive Coordinator Joe Sloan, analyzing game film. He shared his enthusiasm on social media, saying, "I had a great time... thank you for taking the time."
When coaches take the time to demonstrate how a player fits into their system, it becomes much easier for recruits to envision their future in that program.
The Texas Connection: 5-Star Ismael Camara
Stein’s recruiting efforts aren’t limited to quarterbacks. He’s leveraging his Texas connections to bolster the "Big Blue Wall." 5-star offensive lineman Ismael Camara, a top-30 national player from Gilmer, Texas, visited campus and felt an immediate bond.
“Coach Stein and Coach Leftwich are very close to me," Camara remarked. "We always say Coach Stein is a Gilmer Buckeye just without the diploma.” In recruiting, these personal connections can transform a "visit" into a "commitment."
Will Stein's Time Management Mastery
Stein’s ability to juggle spring practice with a high-profile recruiting weekend is impressive, and his energy is palpable. He's reawakening a sleeping giant in Lexington, and for the first time in a long while, the excitement around the Wildcats might just match the expectations.
