Kentucky Basketball's Denim Revival: A Nostalgic Nod to the Past
Kentucky basketball fans have been treated to a stylish blast from the past this season. In February, the Wildcats donned special retro denim uniforms during a home victory over Tennessee, paying homage to the iconic 1995-96 national championship season. That unforgettable year saw current UK coach Mark Pope as a co-captain, and the recent win over the Volunteers marked a 30th-anniversary celebration for "the Untouchables" at Rupp Arena.
The festivities didn't stop with the uniforms. Fans were able to snag fresh denim apparel, and now, even more is on the horizon.
Converse, the original apparel sponsor during the legendary 1995-96 season, has crafted a special “Kentucky Denim” shoe. This sneaker will be up for grabs on the Nike SNKRS app starting Friday. Although Nike took over as UK's apparel partner in 1997 and later acquired Converse in 2003, this collaboration brings a nostalgic twist to the present.
But that's just the start. Also launching on the Nike SNKRS app are denim-themed jerseys and shorts, available in both white and blue colorways. The jerseys are priced at $120, the shorts at $80, and the “Kentucky Denim” shoes at $130, all set to drop Friday morning.
These items have already made appearances at Lexington's Oneness store, but now fans everywhere can join in the denim celebration.
Adding to the denim craze, Homefield, an Indiana-based company renowned for its unique college sports apparel, is unveiling a “1996 Kentucky Denim Collection.” This collection features a denim-themed hat and a shirt with a retro Kentucky logo, expanding their existing lineup of over 80 UK products, many celebrating the 1995-96 championship team.
And there's more for the denim-loving Wildcats faithful. Back in February, former Kentucky star Devin Booker released a special denim version of his signature Nike shoe. Dubbed the “Nike Book 2 Must Be The Denim,” these shoes were initially gifted to UK basketball team members and made available to fans at a pop-up event near Rupp Arena.
Now, these exclusive kicks are set for a wider release. Fans can purchase them starting March 20, coinciding with the first round of the NCAA Tournament. According to Sole Retriever, the shoes will be available through Nike and select retailers, both in-store and online, priced at $145.
For Kentucky fans, this denim revival isn't just about fashion; it's a celebration of a storied past and a nod to the legacy that continues to inspire.
