In Nashville, Otega Oweh is rewriting the script for Kentucky basketball, channeling the spirit of Wildcats legends. With his recent performances, he's become the first Kentucky player since Jamal Murray in 2016 to kick off an SEC Tournament with consecutive games scoring over 21 points.
Oweh dropped 23 points against LSU and followed it up with 21 in a nail-biter against Missouri. He's now racked up 1,192 career points, the second-highest for a Wildcat through two seasons since the legendary Dan Issel.
That's some elite company.
Oweh's clutch gene was on full display this week. In the LSU game, his jumper with just over a minute left gave Kentucky a seven-point cushion, and he sealed the deal with a late free throw.
Against Missouri, he hit another critical jumper with 1:13 remaining, pushing the Wildcats to a three-point lead after they had let a 16-point advantage slip away. This resilience marks a significant shift from earlier in the season when Kentucky struggled in similar situations, notably against Missouri in January.
Reflecting on the team's growth, Oweh noted, "I think we probably would have folded. We’ve been in that position before...but the season’s long.
You just keep on getting better." His maturity and leadership, alongside teammates like Denzel Aberdeen and Collin Chandler, have been pivotal.
Despite a slow start against Missouri, scoring just six points on 3-8 shooting in the first half, Oweh surged back with 15 points in the second half. Crucially, Kentucky's defense locked down Missouri, preventing them from scoring a field goal in the final 2:34.
Looking ahead, Kentucky faces a formidable challenge against the top-seeded Florida Gators, a team they've yet to defeat this season. If the Wildcats are to pull off an upset, they'll need Oweh to continue his stellar play and lead the charge.
