Otega Oweh Begins His Next Chapter After Becoming A Kentucky Favorite

Otega Oweh sets out to embody Kentucky's enduring basketball tradition as he takes his first steps into the NBA with the Oklahoma City Thunder's Summer League team.

Otega Oweh’s Kentucky run is over, but his next chapter is already getting underway.

The former Wildcat has been officially added to the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Summer League roster, according to Clemente Almanza, and he’ll be on the floor in blue and orange as summer play begins today. Oweh, who was selected at No. 41 by the Thunder, is moving on to the NBA with the same kind of momentum he built in Lexington.

Jayden Quaintance was also listed on the San Antonio Spurs roster, though he will not play as he continues to nurse his knee.

For Kentucky fans, Oweh leaves behind more than just numbers. He became one of the defining figures of Mark Pope’s first two seasons, the kind of player who seemed to deliver when the moment got loud. His March Madness buzzer-beater this past March was the peak of that reputation, but it was hardly the only one.

Oweh made an immediate impression early in the 2024 season when he stripped Cooper Flagg in Kentucky’s win over Duke, a play that said plenty about the edge he brought every night. Across both of his seasons as a Wildcat, he averaged more than 16 points, four rebounds and two assists, stacking up memorable moments along the way.

There was the pair of wins over his former team, Oklahoma, in the same season. There was the Koby Brea lob slam against Tennessee in Rupp Arena. And there was the larger feeling around his time in Lexington: that he helped steady the program during a major transition, giving Big Blue Nation something to trust as Pope took over after John Calipari’s exit.

Oweh’s NCAA Tournament run ended in the Sweet 16, but his place in Kentucky’s recent story was already secure. Now he gets his first NBA look, and Wildcats fans will be watching just as closely as they did in Lexington.

Mark Popes Toughest Portal Call Just Took A Painful Turn

Donnie Freemans next chapter at St. Johns was supposed to be part of one of the more intriguing transfer battles of the cycle, with Kentucky and Rick Pitinos program both in the mix before the Red Storm won out. For Mark Pope, the decision to step away from that chase was never just about talent. Freeman had already spent two seasons at Syracuse fighting through foot and toe problems, and the Wildcats had enough reason to worry about how much durability risk they were willing to absorb.

Now that concern looks even more pointed. Freemans move to St. Johns has already been hit by a major setback, and it gives Kentuckys choice a harsher light in hindsight, especially for a staff trying to balance roster upside with long-term availability. The portal market keeps forcing coaches into those kinds of calls, and this one has quickly become a reminder that the wrong injury bet can linger well beyond the recruiting window. [Read more 🡒]

Kerr Kriisa's Summer Return To BBN Just Took A Stunning Turn

Kerr Kriisas planned summer stop back in Lexington was supposed to be a feel-good one, with the former Kentucky guard recently announced for La Familias run in The Basketball Tournament. The alumni team was set to have him in the mix for an upcoming matchup against Louisville, a familiar kind of summer basketball spotlight that usually leans more on nostalgia and fan interest than headlines off the floor.

Instead, La Familia has already confirmed Kriisa will not compete, and the group declined further comment as the situation unfolded. What had looked like a simple roster addition has turned into something far more serious, leaving Kentucky fans with one more reminder that the offseason can change fast and that not every return to BBN comes with the kind of story anyone expected. Kentucky Has A Summer League Wrinkle Fans Will Want To Watch

Kentuckys summer basketball footprint is already spread across the NBA, with several former Wildcats turning up on different rosters as the leagues offseason showcase gets rolling. Recently drafted Otega Oweh is with the Oklahoma City Thunder in Summer League, while Jacob Toppin is suiting up for the Atlanta Hawks in the Salt Lake City event, giving Kentucky fans a chance to track familiar names in more than one place at once.

The calendar only gets busier from here. More ex-Wildcats are working through the California Classic and will soon join the mix in Las Vegas, where all 30 NBA teams are set to take part beginning July 9. For a fan base that follows its alumni closely, that means the next few weeks should offer a steady stream of Kentucky connections worth keeping an eye on. [Read more 🡒]
