North Carolina Fires Hubert Davis After Five Seasons

North Carolina parts ways with Hubert Davis as head coach after five seasons, initiating a search for new leadership following the team's unexpected NCAA Tournament exit.

In a significant shake-up for the Tar Heels, North Carolina has parted ways with head coach Hubert Davis following an unexpected early exit from the NCAA Tournament. Davis, who helmed the team for five seasons, leaves behind a record of 125-54.

The decision, announced by UNC, was made by athletic director Bubba Cunningham and executive associate athletic director Steve Newmark, who will step into the AD role this July. Chancellor Lee H. Roberts accepted the recommendation, marking the end of Davis' tenure.

Cunningham expressed gratitude for Davis’ contributions, acknowledging the lasting memories he created as a player, assistant, head coach, and community leader. “This was not an easy decision,” Cunningham noted, “but we must move forward in a way that allows our team to compete more consistently at an elite level.”

Newmark echoed these sentiments, highlighting Davis’ deep connection to the university and his efforts to instill Tar Heel tradition in his players. “Chancellor Roberts, Bubba, and I join all of the Carolina community in thanking Hubert and his family for all they have done for UNC,” Newmark stated.

As UNC honors the terms of Davis’ contract, the search for a new head coach is already underway. Cunningham and Newmark are spearheading the search, with assistance from the executive search firm Turnkey ZRG. They will also consult an advisory group composed of former players, coaches, and key supporters of UNC athletics, aiming to find a leader who can guide the Tar Heels back to consistent success on the national stage.
