Kentucky may not know exactly what Mason Williams’ role will look like yet, but it already knows this much: the freshman guard doesn’t seem intimidated by the moment.
That was on display yesterday while Williams was out supporting La Familia as the blue and white alumni took JHX Hoops (Kansas) to task. During the action, Williams was caught jawing with Jayhawks legend and NBA champion Mario Chalmers, and he didn’t appear interested in backing down despite the gap in experience.
And sure, he was only on the baseline. Sure, he still hasn’t played a game as a Wildcat.
But there’s something to be said for a newcomer who’s willing to mix it up with a college hoops legend before he’s even taken the floor. That kind of edge feels like part of the SEC package.
Williams also flashed a little more than attitude. He buried a deep three on his first attempt in front of the La Familia crowd, which only added to the moment.

Williams arrives in Lexington as a four-star point guard who will have to earn whatever minutes come his way this season. Mark Pope’s lone freshman contributor is currently projecting as a floor general off the bench, though that spot is far from locked down with Jerone Morton also in the mix and bringing experience at the position.
At 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, Williams is not the biggest guard on the floor, and his path to playing time will depend heavily on what he brings mentally as much as physically. That matters even more given that he followed his dad, assistant coach Mo Williams, to Lexington after previously being committed to Jackson State.
There was a time when Williams looked headed toward a more expansive opportunity, and that only makes the current setup more interesting. If he can give Kentucky steady playmaking in second-unit minutes, especially once conference play arrives, he could end up being one of those bench pieces that quietly lifts the team’s floor.
The fit has looked good on paper from the start, and the baseline exchange with Chalmers only reinforced the idea that Williams has the kind of edge Kentucky wants. For a program that lives on toughness, that’s not a bad first impression at all.
