Mark Pope still has one more move to make, and Kentucky’s roster picture could get even more interesting if the right player shakes loose.
The Wildcats currently sit at 14 players, with a 15th spot open if Pope decides the fit is there. In a college basketball world that keeps getting reshaped by the transfer portal and by the NCAA’s latest eligibility proposals, that final opening gives Kentucky a little room to keep hunting.
Pope addressed the situation recently on UK Sports Network, and he made it clear that the rules landscape is still very much in motion.
“We’re getting new rulings every single day, and there are appeal cases on the boards. But it’s interesting to be this far into the summer and still uncertain about what the rules even are.
It certainly opens up some opportunities for us that we’ve been anticipating and sitting on and waiting for. And so we’ll see how things play out.”
That uncertainty matters because the NCAA has proposed a new setup built around five years of eligibility for student-athletes within five years. Under that framework, members of the class of 2022 could potentially have another year of college eligibility available to them. The proposal is still being heavily litigated and appealed, so nothing is settled yet.
For Kentucky, though, the possibility creates a path to add another piece if the market breaks the right way. Pope and his staff have kept themselves in position to take advantage, and the names already floating around are no small ones: Michigan State’s Jaxon Kohler, Missouri’s Mark Mitchell and former Auburn forward Keyshawn Hall.
There’s obvious appeal in a scorer like Mark Mitchell, the kind of player who can get a bucket when things bog down. But Kohler brings a different kind of value, and if Pope is looking for one more addition, a fifth-year player with that kind of experience would make sense in a lot of ways.
For now, Kentucky is waiting on the rules, waiting on the appeals and waiting on the right player to emerge. If that happens, Pope may still have one final slot to fill.
