Mark Popes Kentucky Team Is Already Sending A Clear SEC Message

Kentucky's dominant performance and tactical prowess leave their opponents struggling as they prepare to shake up SEC basketball.

John Gallagher came away from Kentucky’s 85-57 win over Manhattan on Tuesday night with plenty of praise for Mark Pope’s team, and even more respect for the way the Wildcats handled the game.

The Manhattan coach said the final margin didn’t fully capture how one-sided things felt, and he made a point of thanking Kentucky for the experience.

“Just want to thank the University of Kentucky, and the fan base. We spent two days here, first class,” said Gallagher.

“We’ve been all over the country, Kansas, and Duke, and this is as good an experience as I’ve had. I want to thank everybody for that.”

Gallagher has known Pope for years, dating back to when Gallagher was at Hartford and Pope was coaching at Utah Valley. He even laughed about a meeting in Las Vegas that drew only a tiny crowd.

“I like his squad. For us, I thought we just didn’t make enough shots early, and their size really was a factor,” Gallagher said.

“I studied them. Studied their three preseason games.

They have a lot of pieces. They got shooters, and they got size.

They’re going to be a handful in SEC play, in my opinion.”

What stood out to Gallagher most was the way Kentucky created problems with its spacing and movement. He said the Wildcats used some “unique” actions that forced Manhattan into tough defensive choices, and he credited Pope for making the right adjustments.

“We’re overhelping, like Nebraska does, Iowa State does, where you put a man in the hole, and then you put a gunner. It’s called a goalie and gunner. So they were skipping it, we give that skip up, but they manipulated the floor, putting the guy higher,” Gallagher said.

“I give them a lot of credit, but Mark at the end of the day, he did a good job finding manipulation. Now we have to believe there’s a challenge to that.

We’re just not ready for that. So I think what happened, they really did a good job of spacing us.

This will be a really good game tape for us to study.”

Kentucky Heads Into Tennessee With One Big Availability Concern

The SEC Availability Report for Kentuckys trip to Tennessee has been updated, and it gives the Wildcats a clearer picture of who will and wont be available heading into a rivalry game that already carries plenty of weight. Kentucky did get one player moved up to probable, which is at least a small sign of progress as the team continues to work through a list of long-term injuries that have thinned the roster.

Tennessees report brings its own set of concerns, with multiple long-term injuries and several starters already ruled out for the season. For Kentucky, the bigger question is how much the latest availability shift changes the rotation and whether the Wildcats can absorb the absences well enough to stay competitive in a game where depth and health may matter as much as anything else. Kentucky Gets One More Clue About Mark Pope Before Bigger Tests

Preston Spradlins return to Lexington adds a little extra texture to a game Kentucky is expected to handle comfortably. The former Wildcats assistant now leads James Madison, a program that has established itself as one of the stronger teams in the Sun Belt, so this is not just a nostalgia visit for an old staff hand. It is also another early look at how Mark Popes group is settling in before the schedule gets tougher.

Pope has already made one notable roster decision by ending recruiting efforts with two five-star prospects after adding a new center, a sign the front office is focused on the pieces already in place. For Kentucky, the bigger picture is less about one December-like matchup and more about how the coach balances evaluation, development and the realities of a roster that may be largely set. Games like this can still offer a useful read, even if the betting line suggests the Wildcats should be in control. [Read more 🡒]

Heard has logged 461 snaps and drawn praise for both his performance and the way he has carried himself inside the program.
