Mark Pope may be headed for a familiar kind of frustration on the recruiting trail, and this one comes with an old-school twist: UCLA.
After originally projecting Nikola Kusturica to Kentucky, 247Sports’ Travis Branham has changed his prediction and now has the rising international standout landing with Mick Cronin and the Bruins. Since Branham has already flipped his pick once, the new update carries real weight, and the direction of this recruitment now points firmly toward Los Angeles.
For Kentucky, that likely means one thing: a quick pivot to fill the final roster spot.
This would not be the first time Cronin has beaten Pope in a head-to-head recruiting situation. Around this time last year, the two coaches were in the mix for transfer guard Donovan Dent. The Kentucky buzz never turned into a win, and Dent ended up at UCLA while Pope moved on to Jaland Lowe.
There is still a difference between the two situations, though. Kentucky is in a much stronger place when it comes to transfer options, sitting at No. 2 nationally in 247Sports’ transfer rankings compared with UCLA at No.
- And with the way Pope’s roster is set up, Kusturica would not exactly be walking into a clear runway for major minutes.
The 17-year old FC Barcelona star is currently averaging 18.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 1.5 APG, 2.0 SPG and 2.0 BPG at the FIBA U17 World Cup.
Even with those numbers, Kentucky’s wing and forward group would make this a crowded fit. Milan Momcilovic, Kam Williams, and Braydon Hawthorne are all already in the mix at the same general spot, and all three are older than Kusturica. That makes the path to a guaranteed role a little murky in Lexington.
UCLA, on the other hand, appears to have what Kentucky cannot offer in this spot: money and immediate playing time. That combination explains why Cronin has a real shot here, even if the backdrop is not exactly quiet these days in Westwood.
So while losing out on Kusturica would sting - especially if he develops into the kind of player some project him to be - this does not look like a damaging miss for Pope. It looks more like a swing for upside that would have complicated the rotation.
Kentucky still enters the season as a perennial top 25 team, and there is no shortage of reasons for BBN to feel good about what Pope has built. This one may belong to UCLA, but it does not change the bigger picture in Lexington.
