Mark Pope didn’t wait long to make a move on RJ Evans.
While Kentucky was splitting time between Nike EYBL Peach Jam, Adidas 3SSB and UA Rise, Pope headed from North Augusta to Rock Hill on Saturday morning to watch some of the Adidas circuit’s top targets. That stop turned into something bigger when he got a look at 2029 wing RJ Evans, and Kentucky quickly jumped in with an offer.
Evans, a 6-7 forward, backed up the attention with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double in the matchup that also featured 2028 guard Jason Gardner Jr. The performance was enough for Pope to extend an offer on the spot, a notable early move for a player in the 2029 class who is already being viewed as one of the top prospects regardless of age group.
Evans’ list is already growing. Along with Kentucky, he also holds offers from Louisville, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, Florida State, NC State and Providence, among others.
What makes Evans stand out is how he’s producing while playing well above his age group. As a 2029 prospect, he’s supposed to be in 15U, but he’s competing in the 17U division and holding his own against older, stronger competition. That alone has helped build the case that he may be the best player in his class.
He also turned heads in Rock Hill with a 32-point, nine-rebound outing in front of a number of top schools. In that game, he added four assists and showed a polished scoring package.

For Kentucky, the timing stands out. The Wildcats have already offered four players in the rising junior class, and Evans is now the one rising sophomore on that list. It’s an unusually early swing, but one that suggests Kentucky and Louisville are both trying to get in front of the race before it really takes off.
According to Evans, assistant coach Mo Williams delivered the offer on Saturday. Given how quickly Williams has made his presence felt on the recruiting trail in Lexington, that could matter as Kentucky continues to push for Evans this early in the process.
For now, the message is clear: Kentucky saw enough in Rock Hill to act immediately, and Evans is firmly on the Wildcats’ radar.
