Mark Mitchell’s arrival in Lexington should give Kentucky a much cleaner path at the four, and it may end up doing the same thing for Ousmane N’Diaye’s development.
Before Mitchell was added, there was real concern about that spot for the Wildcats. That’s why so many fans were eager for Coach Mark Pope to land the Missouri transfer.
An open practice offered a first look at the pairing of N’Diaye and Justin McBride, and the takeaway wasn’t that they struggled badly. It was more that both players still have some growing to do before November arrives.
N’Diaye, in particular, has generated plenty of buzz. At seven feet, he brings shooting touch and looks like a strong fit at the four in Pope’s system.
But it also appears he may need more time than some fans expected before he’s fully ready for college basketball. That makes Mitchell’s addition even more valuable, because it eases the burden on N’Diaye and gives him room to develop without being forced into too much too soon.
That matters because N’Diaye is coming from Italy, and the jump from basketball in Europe to college basketball is not an easy one. The pressure on him would have been significant if he had been the likely starter at four. Now that Mitchell is officially in Lexington, N’Diaye can settle into a smaller role and keep working through the details of Pope’s system.
There is plenty to like in N’Diaye’s game. He is a freak athlete who can run the floor, handle the ball and shoot the three.
The next step is learning how to play within a team structure, and that seems to be part of what is taking time. In the film, he also took some questionable shots, and that is not going to fly in Lexington if he wants a meaningful role for Pope and the Wildcats.
Mitchell’s presence also gives Pope a safety net. If N’Diaye is not ready right away, Kentucky still has an elite option at the four.
That kind of depth matters, even if the ideal outcome is still for N’Diaye to keep progressing and eventually sort it all out. His growth over the next few months will be a big part of the story.
