Malachi Moreno Stuns as NBA Scouts Eye Kentucky Freshman

Could Kentucky's Malachi Moreno be eyeing the NBA, or is another season in college the smarter play for the rising star?

Could Kentucky freshman Malachi Moreno be on the fast track to the NBA? With his recent performances, NBA scouts are starting to take notice.

NBAdraftroom.com highlights Moreno as a "fast rising center prospect" with first-round potential in the 2026 or 2027 draft. They commend his "solid frame, coordination, strength, timing as a shot blocker, and length," though they note he might not be the most explosive player on the court.

Matt Babcock, a respected NBA draft analyst, sees Moreno as checking many of the boxes NBA teams look for in a big man. "Despite some limitations, his size and mobility make him effective, especially defensively.

Strengthening and developing his offensive game will be crucial. He's a prospect to keep an eye on," Babcock shared on babcockhoops.com.

On the other hand, Krysten Peek from NBA.com notes that the buzz around the 7-footer isn't overwhelming among NBA executives and scouts. "Testing the NBA draft waters could be beneficial for him.

Getting feedback and returning to college could enhance his draft status, especially in a weaker 2027 class," she advises. Peek points out the financial reality: "Players drafted from 33 to 60 often sign two-way contracts, earning around $500,000 in the G League.

Many players are returning to college, where they can earn more through NIL deals."

Peek also mentions that while one-and-done players won't disappear, the value of more seasoned players is increasing. "The NBA will always bet on youth and potential, but experienced players are more valuable than ever."

Interestingly, Peek believes that not making the USA U19 team was a blessing in disguise for Moreno. "He returned to campus motivated, ready to work.

It's similar to Chris Cenac's experience at Houston. Adversity can be a catalyst for growth."

ESPN's Jimmy Dykes appreciates that Moreno leads all SEC freshmen in offensive rebounds but acknowledges he has work to do. "He needs an offseason to refine his outside shot for the next level," Dykes notes.

Peek also highlights how Moreno has capitalized on the absence of projected first-rounder Jayden Quaintance, who has been sidelined with a knee injury. "It was a 'next man up' situation, and Malachi seized the opportunity," she says.

Kenny Walker, former UK All-American and now a WLAP Radio UK analyst, believes Moreno needs to toughen up physically. "He should hit the weights hard this summer to build muscle.

Working on being meaner and tougher is essential. Bringing in former UK players like Winston Bennett or Jamal Magloire could help him develop that edge needed to make the leap," Walker suggests.

Moreno's journey is one to watch, as he balances potential with the need for growth and development.
