Kentuckys Transfer Surge Is Suddenly Fueling A Real SEC Threat

Discover the standout performances of college football's top transfer players of Week 6, as they create game-changing moments across the gridiron.

Week 6 turned into a showcase for transfer portal talent across the country, with former transfers shaping wins in every corner of the slate. From clutch overtime plays to huge rushing performances and big defensive stops, the portal continues to leave a real mark on the 2026 college football season.

UCLA’s Wayne Knight was right in the middle of it at Oregon. With starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava leaving the game with an injury and the Bruins grinding through a tough offensive day, the James Madison transfer carried the load again. Knight ran for 103 yards on 22 carries, scored once on the ground and added a receiving touchdown in UCLA’s win over the Ducks.

Kentucky got another huge night from Kenny Minchey, who has now delivered the winning two-point conversion in overtime in back-to-back weeks. The Notre Dame transfer went 23 of 36 for 246 yards before finishing the game himself on the decisive conversion, lifting the Wildcats past No.

10 LSU, 35-34, in Lexington. Kentucky is now 5-1 under first-year head coach Will Stein, and Minchey has been central to that start.

He has thrown only one interception this season.

Another transfer making a massive late impact was Indiana receiver Nick Marsh. Michigan State’s former wideout gave the Hoosiers the burst they needed in the fourth quarter at Nebraska, scoring on touchdown grabs of 44 and 75 yards in the final period of a 20-17 comeback win. Marsh finished with six catches for 187 yards, and his second score came on Indiana’s game-winning drive when quarterback Josh Hoover hit him wide open on 4th-and-1 for the 44-yard touchdown.

Houston tight end Patrick Overmyer tied a major FBS mark on Saturday. The UTSA transfer caught all four of Conner Weigman’s touchdown passes in the Cougars’ win, tying the FBS single-game record for touchdown receptions by a tight end. Overmyer ended with eight catches for 83 yards as Houston moved to 5-1 and set itself up for a top-25 matchup with Oklahoma State this week.

Oklahoma’s Lloyd Avant didn’t pile up eye-popping numbers, but he was everywhere the Sooners needed him in the Red River Rivalry. The Colorado State transfer finished with 72 yards on 10 carries, including a 42-yard burst that stood as Oklahoma’s longest run of the season. He also punched in a 2-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, giving the Sooners their first offensive score in the rivalry game in two years.

Kentucky had another transfer portal star in CJ Baxter. The Texas transfer totaled 123 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries in the upset of LSU, averaging 6.5 yards per attempt and breaking loose for a 72-yard run. While Minchey handled the decisive play at the end, Baxter gave Kentucky the kind of ground production that kept the Wildcats moving all night.

On the defensive side, Missouri’s Donta Simpson Jr. helped power a statement performance against Texas A&M. The Miami transfer was credited with two tackles for loss as the Tigers rolled to a 27-6 win. Missouri’s front was relentless, holding the Aggies to 216 total yards and just 29 rushing yards.

Oregon State quarterback Braden Atkinson kept stuffing the stat sheet in the Pac-12. The Mercer transfer completed 29 of 38 passes for 409 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions in a 66-14 win over San Diego State. Atkinson now has 21 touchdown passes on the season, the most of any FBS passer, and he’s thrown only two interceptions.

Wake Forest’s Gio Lopez joined the list with a four-touchdown afternoon in the Demon Deacons’ 38-14 win over rival NC State. The former South Alabama and North Carolina transfer passed for 303 yards and three touchdowns on 26-of-33 throwing, then added another score on the ground. Three of his four touchdowns came in the third quarter, helping Wake Forest seize control and move to 5-1.

Rounding out the group, Purdue running back Fame Ijeboi had the best game of his college career against his former Minnesota team. Ijeboi carried 31 times for 195 yards and three touchdowns as Purdue improved to 2-1 in the Big Ten.

Kentucky Had LSU Pointing Fingers Instead Of Taking Care Of Business

Lane Kiffin spent much of the postgame trying to dissect the details of LSUs overtime loss to Kentucky, and the conversation quickly shifted from the Tigers missed chances to the officiating. He took issue with a fourth-and-goal spot and several other calls, then spent time defending his own late-game decision to punt on fourth-and-1 rather than keep the offense on the field. It was the kind of aftermath that can make a loss feel even messier, especially in a game that went all the way to overtime.

For Kentucky, the bigger takeaway was less about any single whistle and more about forcing LSU into a night of explanations instead of execution. Kiffin has already been willing to point to outside factors after previous losses, including crowd noise, and this one fit that pattern with the Tigers searching for reasons after letting a winnable game slip away. The Wildcats did enough to leave LSU talking about calls and decisions, which is often the sign a close SEC game has tilted the way a home team wants. [Read more 🡒]

Kentucky Has A Real Week 6 AP Poll Respect Case

The Week 6 Associated Press poll opened up a familiar debate about how much the rankings really reward what teams have done on the field versus what voters thought of them back in August. Texas fell from No. 1 to No. 7 after a close loss, Oklahoma still found itself unranked even after beating the No. 1 team, and James Madison remained outside the top 25 despite being unbeaten. In that kind of landscape, Kentuckys place becomes harder to ignore, especially when the discussion turns to how SEC teams are stacked against one another.

For the Wildcats, the case is not just about one good result or a flattering stretch, but about whether they are being judged with the same standard as teams with bigger preseason reputations. If the AP is leaning too heavily on early assumptions, Kentucky is exactly the kind of program that can get squeezed by it, even while stacking a rsum that looks better than some of the teams sitting above or around it. The question now is whether the next poll finally reflects that reality, or whether the Wildcats are still waiting for voters to catch up. [Read more 🡒]

Kentucky Fans Will Love The LSU Complaint After That TD

Kentuckys 35-34 overtime win over LSU already had plenty of drama, but the late-second-quarter touchdown by Kenny Minchey added another layer to a game that felt tense from start to finish. The Wildcats needed every bit of that margin in a contest that stayed tight all the way into overtime, and the sequence around the score quickly became one of the nights biggest talking points.

Lane Kiffins postgame complaint only sharpened the spotlight on what happened, as he said officials told him the play was not blown dead because of the stakes and the risk of upsetting the home crowd. He also pointed to missed calls and said he could not communicate with the officials the way he wanted during the game, leaving LSU with plenty to stew over after a finish Kentucky fans will be happy to replay.
