Kentucky is entering the 2026 season with the Will Stein era about to begin, and the preseason SEC numbers don’t exactly scream optimism.
FanDuel has posted its odds for the league race, and the Wildcats are near the bottom of the board. Kentucky sits third-to-last in the conference, with only Mississippi State - now in year three under Jeff Lebby - and Arkansas - in year one under Ryan Silverfield - carrying longer odds.
For Kentucky, the number to win the SEC is +12500. To simply reach the championship game, the Wildcats are listed at +6000.
That doesn’t make the idea of a breakout impossible, just a long shot. The source point of comparison is Curt Cignetti’s first season at Indiana, when the Hoosiers opened at +30,000 to win the Big Ten. Indiana didn’t take the league title, but it did finish 11-1 in the regular season and earned a spot in the College Football Playoff in 2024.
Kentucky’s path looks rough from the start. The Wildcats won’t face the two teams with the best championship odds, but they are scheduled to play the teams ranked third, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth, and ninth in the preseason projections. That leaves Stein’s renovated roster with plenty stacked against it.
At the top of the SEC board, Georgia is the favorite at +290, just ahead of Texas at +310. Georgia also draws one of the friendlier schedules in the league, with home games against Oklahoma and Missouri and road trips to Alabama and Ole Miss.
If there’s a team to keep an eye on as a possible SEC Championship game sleeper, Tennessee stands out at +700. The Vols get a favorable slate, with their toughest matchups at home against Texas, LSU, and Alabama, plus a road game at Texas A&M. Freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon, a top-five recruit in this year’s class, could be the best quarterback Josh Heupel has had.
