Kentuckys Playoff Path Just Got A Fascinating Early Test

Discover how the BCS formula anticipates the new College Football Playoff landscape as rankings prepare to debut.

The first College Football Playoff rankings reveal is set for Tuesday night, but before the committee shows its hand, the BCS formula offers a snapshot of what the 12-team bracket would look like after Week 9.

Using the College Football Playoff seeding rules, the BCS projections put Miami, Georgia, Utah and Indiana in the top four spots as conference champions. The rest of the field fills in behind them, with Boise State slotted as the highest-ranked Group of 6 team and Alabama, BYU, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Texas, Ohio State and UCLA also in the mix.

Miami stays at No. 1 in both polls and the BCS projections after holding off North Carolina in a thriller last week. The Hurricanes are one of three undefeated teams left in the country heading into Week 10, and they now turn to a major matchup against Notre Dame. It has been a strong season for Mario Cristobal’s team, which is trying to get back to the national title game after last year’s run.

Georgia checks in at No. 2 after a convincing 27-8 win over Florida coming out of the bye. The Bulldogs used a strong second quarter to take control at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and get back in the win column. They are tied with Kentucky atop the SEC standings heading into Week 10, and Saturday night brings another big test at Ole Miss in a game with major SEC and CFP implications.

Utah holds the No. 3 spot after backing up its thrilling win over Houston with a 49-25 road victory at Cincinnati. The Utes are 8-0 under new coach Morgan Scalley, and they now head into a rivalry showdown with BYU on Saturday morning at Rice-Eccles Stadium. It’s a meeting that carries weight both in the Big 12 race and in the CFP picture.

Indiana rounds out the top four after surviving another tense finish. The Hoosiers needed overtime to get past Minnesota, with the game going to the extra period after the teams traded 60-yard field goals late in regulation.

That made it four straight one-score games for Indiana, which has won three of them. The Hoosiers enter their Week 9 bye at 8-1 overall and 5-1 in Big Ten play.

The projected first-round matchups start with No. 12 Boise State at No.

5 UCLA. Boise State survived a second-half push from Texas State to keep its winning streak rolling and remain atop the conference standings.

As the highest-ranked Group of 6 team, the Broncos would land in the playoff field, and the BCS formula sends them to UCLA. The Bruins are still unbeaten after last week’s non-conference win over Nevada.

The winner there would move on to face Indiana.

No. 11 Ohio State would go to No.

6 Notre Dame in another first-round game. The Buckeyes dropped after last week’s loss at USC, but the BCS formula still keeps them in the field despite their second defeat of the season.

Notre Dame, meanwhile, bounced back from its loss to BYU before the bye by turning things around in the second half against Navy.

The winner of that matchup would draw Utah.

Texas lands at No. 10 and would travel to No. 7 Kentucky.

The Longhorns stayed in the conversation with a 31-3 win over Mississippi State in Week 9, and the BCS projections place them in the playoff field. Kentucky, which was off in Week 8, comes in on a six-game winning streak and heads into this week’s matchup with Tennessee after a strong start under new coach Will Stein.

The winner would face Georgia.

The final projected first-round game has No. 9 Alabama at No.

8 BYU. Alabama picked up a key home win over Texas A&M in Week 8 before the bye, and now the Crimson Tide turn their attention to LSU.

Under the BCS formula, they would open the playoff on the road at BYU.
