In last night's showdown, Kentucky's dominance on the boards was the key to their 72-63 victory over South Carolina. The Wildcats grabbed 48 rebounds compared to the Gamecocks' 28, marking the largest rebounding margin they've achieved against an SEC opponent this season. Malachi Moreno was a standout performer, matching his season-high with 11 rebounds.
Moreno's efforts contributed significantly to Kentucky's 34-20 edge in points in the paint and a commanding 26-7 advantage in fastbreak points. Their aggressive play on the offensive glass resulted in an 18-5 lead in offensive rebounds, translating to a 14-4 advantage in second-chance points. Notably, no South Carolina player managed more than five rebounds.
Corey Price highlighted that Moreno is the first Kentucky player since Karl-Anthony Towns in 2015 to record at least eight points, 11 rebounds, two blocks, and one steal in an SEC road game. Despite three turnovers, Moreno's performance was impressive, especially considering he was managing a minor health issue. Just days earlier, he had sustained a left ankle injury at Auburn but still contributed 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists in 24 minutes.
Coach Mark Pope praised Moreno's resilience and impact, particularly his rim protection and defensive rebounding. South Carolina struggled against his defensive presence, making only 4 of 10 layups and shooting 46.4% on two-point attempts.
“He had unbelievable rim protection,” Pope noted. “His work on the defensive glass was massive for us. Those contested rebounds were crucial, and it was our defense that saved us.”
The Gamecocks started strong, hitting four of their first six three-pointers, a surprising stat for a team with shooting struggles. However, Kentucky's defense tightened, and South Carolina missed all ten of their remaining three-point attempts in the first half, finishing at 27.6% from beyond the arc and 36.8% from the field overall.
Coach Pope acknowledged South Carolina's scoring ability, referencing their recent high-scoring game against Mississippi State. He credited the Wildcats' defensive focus and strategy, led by Coach Alvin Brooks, for limiting the Gamecocks' offense after the initial surge.
Moreno's health will be crucial for Kentucky's aspirations in March. His contributions on both ends of the court are vital, and the team will be eager to have him at full strength for the challenges ahead.
