Kentuckys 6-1 Surge Just Sparked A New Will Stein Debate

Despite second-guessing a key decision, Coach Stein's candid leadership and Kentucky's resilient defense shine through in their victory over Oklahoma.

Will Stein didn’t hide from the moment after Kentucky’s 21-13 win at Oklahoma. He had a choice at the Oklahoma 5-yard line with the Wildcats up 14-13 on fourth-and-4, and he went aggressive instead of settling for what looked like the sure field goal. Oklahoma stopped the play, and Stein was left to live with it.

Then Kentucky’s defense and Jordan Castell made sure the gamble didn’t matter.

Castell’s 41-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the game sealed the win, and Stein said afterward that he could see why the decision felt so bold in real time.

“We were in between going for it and kicking a field goal, depending on the down and distance. We could have gone either way,” Stein said after the game. “Part of me wishes we would have kicked the field goal at that point because it would have put us up four.

“They were having a tough time moving the ball and scoring touchdowns. Nonetheless, when we came off that, Jordan Castell looked at me and said, ‘Coach, I got your back.’

“That makes me feel really good. Our team’s bought in, and they did have my back.”

Kentucky has had its coach’s back all season. The Wildcats are 6-1, sitting 12th in the AP Top 25 and squarely in the College Football Playoff conversation.

And now comes a new wrinkle: for the first time this season, Kentucky will be favored in an SEC game when Vanderbilt visits Saturday night. The Wildcats are listed as 10-point favorites after being a touchdown or more underdog in their first five conference games, including the three road wins they have already banked.

Stein made it clear the record means nothing if Kentucky lets up now. After beating Oklahoma, he pointed right to the next challenge.

“We have another good team coming into our house next week,” Stein said after the Oklahoma win. “In this league, it’s any given Saturday. You can’t take one minute and relax.

“It’s about improvement. It’s about growth. About continuing to strengthen things in practice and giving ourselves another chance to get another victory next week.”

Jake Nawrot Looks Like Exactly What Will Stein Wants At Kentucky

Will Stein wasted little time laying out the traits he wants to build around at Kentucky, and the early recruiting picture fits that vision. The new Wildcats coach made it clear that quarterback accuracy and mental toughness will matter, and that is exactly the kind of profile Jake Nawrot brings to the conversation after completing more than 70% of his passes without throwing an interception during his high school season.

Nawrot is one piece of a broader offensive push that could keep gaining momentum for Kentucky. The Wildcats are also being projected as the favorite to land 4-star offensive tackle John Paul Carrico, a highly regarded in-state prospect, which would give Stein a chance to pair quarterback efficiency with added protection up front. For a staff trying to establish its identity quickly, those two names say plenty about the direction Kentucky wants to head. [Read more 🡒]

Kentuckys 6-1 Start Faces A Reality Check In ESPNs SEC Rankings

Kentuckys 6-1 start has put the program in a far better place than it was a month ago, but the latest update from ESPNs Football Power Index is a reminder that the SEC still sorts itself out quickly. After Week 7, the leagues hierarchy shifted again as recent results from Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Auburn and Tennessee helped reshape the conversation around who looks like a true contender and who is still fighting for footing.

For the Wildcats, the bigger story is less about the record itself and more about where the numbers say they fit in the conference pecking order. ESPNs updated projections offer a snapshot of how each SEC team is being viewed right now, and Kentuckys position in that mix gives the rest of the season a sharper edge. The wins have created momentum, but the rankings suggest there is still plenty left to prove. [Read more 🡒]

Kentuckys Surprise Rise Just Put Will Stein In A New Spotlight

Will Stein arrived at Kentucky with the kind of first-year pressure that usually comes with rebuilding expectations, not national praise. Instead, the former Oregon offensive coordinator has guided the Wildcats into one of the best openings the program has seen in more than a century, and the steady climb has started to pull in outside attention as Kentucky keeps collecting wins in different ways.

The latest glow around Stein comes from the same place the Wildcats momentum does: results that have turned close games into proof points, from overtime finishes to the comeback against Oklahoma. With Kentucky suddenly sitting in the playoff discussion by ESPN FPI ratings, the question now is how long this surge can keep reshaping the conversation around a coach who was supposed to be writing a much quieter first chapter in Lexington.
