Kentucky Underdog Against Iowa State Despite Cyclones' Star's Uncertain Status

Kentucky faces a tough challenge against Iowa State, who are poised as favorites despite the uncertainty of star player Joshua Jefferson's status.

No Joshua Jefferson, no problem for Iowa State-at least according to the oddsmakers. Despite the uncertainty surrounding their star player, the Cyclones are still favored, with Kentucky opening as a 4.5-point underdog for Sunday’s matchup.

The over/under is set at 145.5 points, with the moneyline at +154 for Kentucky, suggesting a projected score of around 75.5-71.5. Analytics from KenPom give Iowa State a 77-70 edge, translating to a 25 percent chance for Kentucky to pull off the upset. Bart Torvik is even less optimistic for the Wildcats, projecting a 78-70 score with only a 22 percent shot at victory.

Iowa State is riding high after a commanding 108-74 win over No. 15 seed Tennessee State in the opening round. This was achieved even after Jefferson exited early with an ankle sprain.

The Cyclones showcased impressive shooting splits of 53/46/78 and dominated the boards with a 43-29 advantage. Their bench outscored Tennessee State’s 50-6, highlighting their depth.

Killyan Toure led with 25 points, supported by Nate Heise’s 22 and Milan Momcilovic’s 17.

Kentucky faces a tough challenge but will be eager to defy the odds and make their mark in Chicago.
